Featured Report: Unlock a Smartphone and You May End Up in Jail

CIO Mobile
Jan,29, 2013

by: Bill Snyder+
Unlocking your own smartphone can now net you a fine of $2,500 -- and people or businesses who get paid to provide unlocking services can go to jail. How crazy is that?

When you buy a smartphone it’s your phone, right? Well, maybe not. In an act of industry-inspired overregulation that's so over the top it's laughable, the feds have decided that unlocking your own iPhone or Android is now illegal and can net you a fine of $2,500. And as they say on late-night infomercials, wait there's more. Anyone who is paid to unlock a smartphone is liable for a fine of up to $500,000 and actual time in prison.

Unlocking allows you to use a phone purchased from one carrier on the network of another carrier as long as the technology is compatible. You could, for instance, unlock an iPhone and use it on T-Mobile’s network, since both carriers use GSM technology, but not on Verizon's or Sprint's CDMA networks. Or you could use your unlocked phone on a foreign carrier's network by swapping SIM cards when you leave the country, and don't want to pay sky high international roaming fees. Read Report

RIM changes name, launches new devices

Jan,30,2013
by: Martha DeGrasse+
After months of speculation about its chances for survival, Research-in-Motion made it clear today that RIM will not be around much longer — the company is changing its name to BlackBerry. “We have reinvented the company, and we want to represent this in our brand,” said CEO Thorstein Heins, who took the helm at the troubled Canadian smartphone maker roughly a year ago — a year he now calls the most challenging of his career.

Of course the company unveiled much more than a new name today. At a New York press event, it launched the BlackBerry 10 operating system, the BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen smartphone and the BlackBerry Q10, a hybrid smartphone that includes a touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard.

Rumor Mill: Apple to make cheaper iPhone that will look like a plastic iPhone 5

Jan,29,2013
by:Phil Goldstein+
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is working on a cheaper version of its popular iPhone that will be largely made from plastic and will look a lot like a mix of Apple devices, according to the blog iLounge. The blog, citing unnamed "reliable sources," said that the device "will be made substantially from plastic" and will have the iPhone 5's Retina display and Lightning dock connector. The blog also said it will have a 4-inch screen like the iPhone 5 but will also sport a "bottom like the latest iPod touch, and a shape that's most similar to the iPod classic." In addition to the plastic casing, a departure from glass and aluminum Apple has used in recent iPhone models, the cheaper iPhone will be more curved in shape

Verizon, AT&T court startups to keep innovation alive and thriving

Jan,29, 2013
by: Sue Marek+
It's not surprising that innovative solutions are difficult to find amid the big Tier 1 wireless operators, which are laser focused on making sure their networks are running smoothly. However, companies like AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) realize that innovation is necessary if they want to continue to thrive, especially now that their networks are all migrating to LTE and differentiation among operators is becoming more difficult to communicate to consumers.

Featured Report: How social media activity influences your search engine ranking

Smart Blog for Social Media
Jan,25, 2013

by: Charles Dearing
Social tools help you connect with readers in a more personal way. This not only gets people to trust you but also lets search engines, such as Google, know that your website is important. This results in a much higher ranking on Google, making your website easier to find. It’s important to include social networking in your daily search engine optimization and to be a leader in your niche.

Use Facebook or Foursquare to show Google your location
Location plays a vital role in Google’s algorithm. If you are on Facebook or Foursquare, the good news is that both networks allow users to check in to a location. Remember that Google uses Web citations from your physical address to verify your location on Google Places and to do your local organic ranking. This indicates that Google does use your location to rank your website.

Reckitt Benckiser Combats 'Social Fatigue,' Bets on Facebook

Jan,28,2013
by: Jack Neff
Laurent Faracci, U.S. chief strategy and marketing officer of Reckitt Benckiser, acknowledges that he works for one of the most cost-focused marketers around. When such a tough customer finds that a Facebook program pays off, it may carry Nixon-goes-to-China weight. That may be why most attendees at Facebook's first CPG Summit on Jan. 17 stuck around to the bitter end in a cramped space near the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York to hear what Mr. Faracci had to say. And the results were encouraging -- at least for RB and Facebook.

Time Spent In Retailers’ Mobile Apps Grows More Than Five-Fold In A Year, Flurry Finds

Jan,25,2013
by:Kim-Mai-Cutler
Consumers spent six times as much time in retailer apps in December compared to a year earlier, showing that shopping and commerce is finally beginning to take off on mobile platforms. Flurry, the mobile analytics startup, looked at about 1,800 iOS and Android apps from December 2011 to December of last year. They also broke it down into five other categories including Retailer Apps, Price Comparison, Purchase Assistant, Online Marketplace and Daily Deals. Time spent in apps overall grew by 132 percent year-over-year, so as you can see above, basically every category except for daily deals outpaced growth in the rest of the ecosystem.
