ONC to Congress: HIEs are Progressing

Joseph Goedert
In its new annual report to Congress on the status of health information technology adoption across the nation, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology provides an update on the reach of statewide health information exchanges funded under the economic stimulus law.
Thirty-nine states and territories had operational statewide health information exchanges offering broadly available directed exchange services--the secure sharing of information between two trusted parties--in December 2012, ONC reports. Directed exchange services were available in certain regions in four states, in pilot stage in five others and not available in eight. Twenty-five states and territories, either through the statewide HIE or other services, broadly offer query exchange to electronically ask for and receive information when the holder of the information is not known. Query exchange is available in some regions in 11 states and not available in 20.

On Thursday, CMS added several new features to its Physician Compare website, but provider groups still have concerns about the accuracy and effectiveness of the tool, Modern Physician reports (Robeznieks, Modern Physician, 6/27).
Background
In December 2010, CMS launched the Physician Compare site to provide consumers with data such as a physician's name, address and Medicare participation status. In July 2012, CMS released a proposed rule outlining the next phase for its Physician Compare website, which involved posting performance data from:

Kelly Fristoe is an independent agent in Wichita Falls, Texas. The outgoing president of the Texas Association of Health Underwriters has been engrained in his community selling insurance for nearly 23 years and knows the heart of his Texas towns. He can’t imagine a navigator being placed anywhere near his business area - a more rural part of Texas. “We have $8 million for navigators in Texas ... I don’t expect that there will be a navigator in communities that’s less than 50,000,” he said during an interview at the National Association of Health Underwriters meeting in Atlanta this week.

EHR Incentive Program
Healthcare Professionals Did You Know? Non-hospital-based physicians and other eligible professionals can obtain incentive payments of as much as $44,000 under Medicare or $63,750 under Medicaid. Under both Medicare and Medicaid, eligible hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementing and meaningfully using certified EHR technology.

About two-thirds (65 percent) of hospitals and 32 percent of office-based physicians plan to enroll in meaningful use programs by the end of 2012 in order to receive the maximum incentives, according to survey results announced Thursday morning. Fewer federal dollars will be available to hospitals and doctors that wait to adopt EHR technology, and failure to meaningfully use EHRs starting in 2015 will result in Medicare penalties. Watch this video about how to register for the EHR Incentive program.

The pluses to a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) strategy can be compelling. First and foremost, if the employee brings his or her own phone or tablet to work, the company is saved the cost of providing one. Having to provide a new phone for your staff every couple of years is a sizeable expense to free yourself from.

AT&T vs. Google and Facebook: the fight for app developers

RCR Wireless U.S.
June,25, 2013
by:Martha DeGrasse

Mobile application development - a job that barely existed a decade ago - has rocketed to the top of software salary charts. A recent Network World survey found that app developers now earn more than wireless network engineers and data modelers, with a projected average salary range this year of $92,750 to $132,500 up 9% from 2012. Not all app developers are employed at startups or even at traditional software companies; telecom operators report a growing demand for app development skill sets. ATT in particular has focused on software skills as it has worked to grow its strategic services for business customers. "We are getting those skills from companies like Google or Facebook or we're getting those skils from other software companies that are the next startup or ... a traditional software company like an SAP," said ATT's Laura Merling.

Privacy Debate Rages as FCC Takes up Mobile CPNI Rules

The operators right now are in a bit of a bind when it comes to recent revelations of the NSA's surveillance program. They're bound by law to cooperate with the government and most likely legally bound not to discuss the program. The best they can do is offer up the party line, which to this point has been that their customers' privacy is of the greatest concern but that they also have an obligation to abide by the law. In this case the law includes handing over detailed calling information to authorities upon request. Going forward, all eyes will be watching what stance the operators take on future security and privacy regulation.

The Dreaded Zeus - Beware of Trojan Virus

Site Pro News
June,21,2013
by:Andrea Eldridge
It's called "Zeus" the latest and rather nasty virus that has been spreading like wild fire through social media forums like Facebook and Twitter via "links" to fake Web pages. Once your computer is compromised, the virus hides and waits until you access your financial account or credit card website and then it goes to work capturing your logins and personal data. That information is then transferred to the cybercriminals' servers - who then sell the data or drain the victim's bank account.

Vendor Relationships and Your Medical Practice
Health1 Physician Practice

Rosemarie Nelson
Vendor relationship management, done with purpose and thoughtfulness, can deliver a successful partnership benefiting any medical group - small or large, multispecialty or single specialty. As the healthcare environment continues to increase in complexity, a true vendor-partner can serve as a consultant to your practice.
Vendors as educators
As a responsible buyer for your medical group, you need to know what solutions are available in the marketplace. However, in this very complex and volatile market, it is a challenge to stay "in the know." Vendors perform a very necessary role by educating buyers about products and services. Consider how providers learn about the new solutions in the pharmaceutical world - isn't that type of introduction to a new product helpful to making an informed decision?
