Though the gender earnings gap has been narrowing across most professions, sharp salary inequities persist among physicians, according to a research letter published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Researchers analyzed data-occupation, hours worked, annual earnings, age, sex and race-from the March Current Population Survey to identify trends in male and female pay among physicians, other healthcare professionals and workers overall. Adjusting for differences in hours worked and years of experience so as not to overstate the earnings gap, they sampled more than 1.3 million people, including 6,258 physicians and 31,857 other healthcare workers, across three time periods (1987-1990, 1996-2000, 2006-2010).

Mobile health oversight: Stability will come with clarity, not rush
Health3 MobiHealthNews
Sep,04,2013
by:+Dan Haley
In 2011 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released draft guidance seeking to clarify its intentions with regard to regulation of mobile health information technology ("mhealth IT"). The Agency solicited and received public comment. Thereafter began a nearly two-year waiting game that continues to this day and has more than a few mobile health stakeholders clamoring for final guidance to provide "clarity" and, by extension, confidence to potential mobile health investors waiting impatiently on the sidelines.

In computing, Moore's Law says costs fall by half every two years as capability improves, yet in healthcare, technology sends bills soaring.
In 25 years, healthcare could account for a third of the economy and consume 30 percent of the federal budget, according to a series of stories introduced in Technology Review.

EHR Incentive Program
Healthcare Professionals Did You Know? Non-hospital-based physicians and other eligible professionals can obtain incentive payments of as much as $44,000 under Medicare or $63,750 under Medicaid. Under both Medicare and Medicaid, eligible hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementing and meaningfully using certified EHR technology.

About two-thirds (65 percent) of hospitals and 32 percent of office-based physicians plan to enroll in meaningful use programs by the end of 2012 in order to receive the maximum incentives, according to survey results announced Thursday morning. Fewer federal dollars will be available to hospitals and doctors that wait to adopt EHR technology, and failure to meaningfully use EHRs starting in 2015 will result in Medicare penalties. Watch this video about how to register for the EHR Incentive program.

Featured Report: How Smart Wi-Fi Improves Wireless Network Performance

CIO Magazine
Jan,02, 2013
by: Paul Rubens
You're sitting in a conference room in your corporate headquarters, trying to download a file to your smartphone. There's a strong Wi-Fi signal, but the download that's been crawling along has finally ground to a halt. This kind of poor Wi-Fi experience is all too common, and thanks to BYOD programs that allow employees to connect their mobile devices to their corporate networks, things are likely to get worse. Here's why: Wi-Fi is a shared medium, which means that only one person (or device) can use it at any given time--everyone else has to wait. So no matter how strongly your device detects a Wi-Fi signal, the more devices that are using it, the slower it will be for everyone.

2013 Predictions: The year of the mobile enterprise app

Jan,15,2013
by:Mary Britain-Whit
If 2011 was the year of the mobile consumer app, then 2012 was the year mobile tablets conquered IT security in enterprises. So the stage is set for 2013 to be the year of the mobile enterprise app. On this we have two predictions:

1. The over hyped capability of HTML5 will be exposed and its use more reasonably profiled to irregularly used enterprise-to-consumer apps, mobile BI and internal wireless extension of administration functions – like expense or travel claims. The end user demand for apps with speed and the ability to work off line will drive native app development for those business areas that have a substantial return on investment for the company.

Analysts push back against reports of weak iPhone 5 demand

Jan,15,2013
by:Phil Goldstein
Analysts and industry observers moved to counter reports that a cutback in Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) orders for iPhone 5 components indicated a drop in demand for the device. The reports, first from Japan's Nikkei and then also from the Wall Street Journal, caused Apple's stock to drop 3.6 percent yesterday. In the aftermath of the reports, analysts said that the reports might not be accurate. "As far as we can tell, iPhone 5 demand remains robust," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu wrote in a research note to clients, according to CNET. Similarly, Baird analyst William Power wrote that he was "actually raising our calendar fourth quarter iPhone forecast slightly," and that "most demand indicators remain favorable."

Jan,15, 2013
by: Andrew Berg
RadioShack and Target have chosen to part ways, dissolving Radio Shack's hand in Target's mobile phone vending operation. According to statement from RadioShack today, the company is shutting down its Target Mobile stores, which are currenrly present in 1,500 Target stores. The closures will be effective April 8, 2013. Featured Report: Survey: Small Business Owners Have Poor Grasp of Health Reform

Health data Management
Oct,31,2012
by: Joseph Goedert
A survey by online health benefits seller eHealthInsurance of 439 small business clients finds most do not understand applicable provisions of the Affordable Care Act. The act requires employers with 50 or more full-time employees to provide coverage. Only two of the surveyed clients were large enough to fall under the requirement, yet 34 percent believed they had to provide coverage, and another 35 percent didn’t know. Thirty-one percent correctly knew that they were not required to pay a tax if they did not offer insurance because of the size of their business. Read Report

What Would RomneyCare Look Like?

Nov,02,2012
by: Joseph Goedert
Should President Obama win a second term, there is little to wonder about his administration’s plans for the health care industry. The president has shown his hand since the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010, and plenty of provisions remain to be implemented. But what happens if Gov. Mitt Romney prevails on November 6? The answers are much less clear.

Coalition Seeks Greater Access to Health Care Cost Information

Nov,01,2012
Catalyst for Payment Reform -- a not-for-profit coalition of major companies and labor unions -- has issued a policy platform calling for broader availability and transparency of health care cost data by January 2014, Modern Healthcare reports (Zigmond, Modern Healthcare, 11/1).

Need for Greater Transparency According to CPR, consumers typically learn the cost of health care services only after receiving a bill, thus denying them the opportunity to find better deals. The group stated that consumers "have the right to know the price and quality of their health care choices," particularly as medical costs are rising and high-deductible health care plans are becoming more common.

AHA sues HHS over Medicare payment denials

Nov, 01, 2012
by: Rich Daly and Joe Carlson
In a federal lawsuit, the American Hospital Association and four healthcare providers accuse HHS of illegally denying hospitals Medicare payments for audited outpatient procedures. The Chicago-based interest group for nearly 5,000 hospitals says in the complaint (PDF) that HHS maintains an illegal policy of refusing to pay hospitals for Medicare outpatient services in cases where auditors retroactively conclude that inpatient care should have been delivered outside the hospital. “It's not acceptable that we have to go through a long, laborious and costly appeal process for payments for medical necessary services and especially when that payment is denied,” Richard Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the AHA, said in an interview.
