Libraries in NYC Lending Wireless Hotspots
Jan,12,2015,
by: Verena Dobnik
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Public Library is launching the nation's largest Internet lending program, handing out 10,000 free high-speed hot spots to some of the city's poorest residents. The program — which offers the devices for up to a year, about a $1,000 value — seeks to bridge a digital divide in the nation's largest city, where studies have found nearly 3 million of the 8 million people lack broadband access. "It is simply unfathomable that in the digital world in which we live, one-third of New Yorkers do not have access to broadband Internet at home, putting them at a serious disadvantage at school, in applying for jobs, and so much more," said Anthony Marx, president of the New York Public Library  Read More

The hoopla emanating from CES in Las Vegas is doubtless troubling execs anxious not to be seen as missing out on the next big thing. From smart projectors to smart beds to a new smart golf club, CES is certainly throwing up something for everyone right now. If you work in digital, then the question of an IoT strategy is likely to crop up imminently. Forrester: Mobile Is The Anti-Channel
Jan,02,2015
by: Sarah Mahoney
, While most marketers continue to think of mobile as a channel — one that runs somewhat parallel to its Internet presence — a new report from Forrester Research says it’s time to reverse that perspective. “Mobile eliminates the notion of channels by blurring the distinction between the physical and digital worlds,” writes analyst Julie A. Ask. And brands like USAA, using mobile as a way to sell expanded services; Starbucks, which is continually finding new ways to streamline purchasing, or Guinness building passionate beer communities, are finding that “mobile generates new revenue, improves customer relationships and reduces costs throughout all channels.”  Read More

Dec,28,2014

Pinterest* will unveil early results from one of its first formal brand advertising efforts on Sunday evening, as the San Francisco company looks to roll out the product widely starting on Jan. 1. The popular site, which has raised more than a half billion dollars in funding, allows users to post, or “pin,” images of clothing, food and other products they like. As the company looked to start ramping up revenue, it began testing a Promoted Pins program that invited brands to pay for pins that appear on the search and category pages.   Read More

Nokia to bring HERE mapping platform to Android via partnership with Samsung
Aug,29,2014
by: Phil Goldstein
Nokia (NYSE:NOK) said it will bring its HERE mapping platform to devices that run Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android software starting with Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphones. The deal represents a major win for Nokia since the company sold its devices business to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) in April.
According to Nokia, thanks to a licensing deal with Samsung, a HERE beta for Android will be made available for free in October when Samsung rolls out its Gear S smart watch, which runs on the Tizen platform but also supports HERE. That should strengthen the link between the wearable device and Samsung's smartphones, which can be paired together via Bluetooth. Read more

Microsoft finally cracks down on deceptive Windows Store 'crap apps'
Aug,28,2014
by: Mark Hachman
So-called deceptive “crap apps” have always plagued the Windows Store. But now, Microsoft appears to be finally ready to do something about them.
In a blog post late Wednesday, Microsoft said that it had removed 1,500 deceptively named apps as part of a policy shift to crack down on developers “trying to game the system with misleading titles or descriptions,” the company said.
A year ago, Microsoft publicly said that the Windows Store has more than 100,000 apps, and it’s unlikely that that number has climbed higher than 200,000 apps by now. But as far back as Oct. 2012—before Windows 8 even launched—analysts were pointing out that the fate of the Windows 8 app store didn’t need a large number of apps to be successful. It needed quality, and that’s not what Microsoft delivered. Instead, consumers are faced with numerous clone apps and paid “alternatives” to freeware, both outcomes that give those users a bad taste in their mouths.  Read More

Apple Updates Mobile App Ad-serving Guidelines

Sept,01,2014
by: Tim Maytom

Apple has released new, stricter guidelines for developers submitting apps to the iTunes store designed to serve ads.
Under the new rules, Apple will reject mobile apps that don’t use Advertising Identifiers, specifically the IDFA, a unique ID for each iOS device that is the only way to offer targetd ads across the network. Apps may also be rejected if they use the IDFA but do not display ads properly or have a built-in advertising, or indicate they don’t use the IDFA when they do.
With more and more developers using deep linking to help people discover relevant content within their apps, identifying content-related ads in apps has become increasingly important. Apple has expanded its iAd advertising network into 16 countries and regions, moving into Russia and Switzerland most recently.  Read More

Reality Check: The rise of mobile-first enterprises and the impact on devops

July,01,2014
by:  Don Addington
Agile and development and operations methodologies have made sweeping cultural changes in enterprise IT. Many of these changes have had technological enablers – virtualized servers, server-based app deployments (think HTML and CSS), and unit test frameworks – that made continuous testing and continuous deployment truly possible. It’s hard to determine whether culture changed the technology or if technology change the culture. Either way, we are getting good at it. Take, for example, Amazon.com’s frequently quoted deployment stats: 11.6 seconds between deployments; more than 1,000 deployments in a single hour; and as many as 30,000 hosts receiving a deployment simultaneously. The numbers are staggering. Read More

Mobile apps now account for more than half of all digital media time
June,27,2014
Mike Dano
"May turned out to be a banner month for mobile," research firm comScore noted, pointing to its new research showing that mobile platforms--smartphones and tablets--combined to account for 60 percent of "total digital media time spent," up from 50 percent a year ago. The firm also said that mobile apps accounted for more than half of all digital media time spent in May at 51 percent.
The firm noted that this shift to mobile is affecting different content categories differently. For example, full 96 percent of all digital radio is consumed through a mobile device, while just 4 percent is consumed on a desktop computer. On the other hand, social networking is slightly more evenly split, with 71 percent of users accessing it through mobile and 29 percent access it through a desktop computer.   Read More

The enterprise may be ready for Internet of Things, but networks are not
June,30,2014
by: Charlie Osborne
Enterprises are ready to profit from the Internet of Things (IoT), but security concerns and network capacity worries are holding back deployment.
According to a recent survey commissioned by network control company Infoblox, the majority of IT professionals believe that IoT is a potentially lucrative market, but there may not be enough network capacity to handle the demand that will accompany an anticipated explosion in the number of connected devices.
The research, carried out in May, was conducted online and collected 400 responses from US and UK network managers and executives involved in building, running, and managing enterprise networks at firms with over 1,000 employees. The majority of respondents — 90 percent — are either planning or already implementing solutions to cope with the increased demands on networking caused by IoT projects.  Read More

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Google is once again selling its Internet-connected eyewear to anyone in the U.S. as the company fine-tunes a device that has sparked intrigue and disdain for its potential to change the way people interact with technology. The latest release of Google Glass comes a month after a one-day sale gave U.S. residents their first chance to buy the hottest accessory in geek fashion. Google Inc. isn't setting a time limit for people to buy Glass this time, although the company is emphasizing that the product remains in its test, or "Explorer," phase.

Text-to-911 goes live, and regional carriers are getting ready

May,15,2014
by:Martha DeGrasse

Google The nation's four largest carriers are turning on text-to-911 services in several areas today as the first step in a process that should be complete by the end of the year. The Federal Communications Commission wants all mobile subscribers in the U.S. to have access to text-to-911 by year-end, but the carriers cannot make it happen on their own. Text messages sent to 911 are handled by local public safety answering points (PSAPs). Slowly but surely, PSAPs are deploying the hardware and software they need to enable the service.
