Physician-Patient Email Communication on Rise

Oct,23,2014

Greg Goth

A new study from Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) offers some early insights into the effects of increasing numbers of emailed communications on doctors, suggesting that reimbursement models and physician workflow may need to adjust to accommodate message management. The were published online in Health Affairs.
“BIDMC was one of the first hospitals in the country to create a patient web portal providing a secure platform for patients to view parts of their medical record and send emails to their clinicians,” said lead author Bradley Crotty, M.D. “The portal became available in 2000, so we were able to take a 10-year look at the data and examine the email traffic resulting from this new use of technology.” Read More

The vast majority – 95 percent – of IT managers are prepared to admit that they are struggling to tackle all the potential security threats they face and 87 percent believe that the biggest threats came from mobile devices in the hands of careless employees, according to a new survey. Check Point's third annual security survey is focused this year on mobile devices. The company interviewed 700 IT professionals in the US, UK, Germany, Canada and Australia.  Read More

When it Comes to Mobile, IT is Out of Touch
Oct,29,2014

by:Matt Weinberger

"I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you!" warned Abraham Simpson -- of the Springfield Simpsons -- way back in 1996. It's true, and like it or not, mobile is the new gamemaker in business -- if you haven't adopted a mobile strategy that enables productivity on the go, rest assured that your competitors have. And even if you have, there's an arms race to build better, more user-friendly applications, faster. If that doesn't cause enough stress, a new study by app development platform Appcelerator and IDC Research suggests that IT departments may not be as in control of the mobile agenda as they thought, with developers and IT pros reporting drastically different experiences. The Vague, Undefined Promise of 5G
Oct,27,2014
by: Andrew Berg
The term 5G is as yet completely meaningless aside from the fact that the moniker is the obvious successor to the current status quo of 4G. But it's also grossly obtuse because we don't even know on what criteria the ITU will base its definition of 5G. I spoke with Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas about a recently published white paper that addresses first steps for the development of and investment in 5G technology. "It's a question I'm asked a lot, and more often than not people are asking whether 5G is about speed," Pearson said. "My answer is no. It's going to be about improving and enhancing what we have today with LTE-Advanced as we look at what the mobile requirements are out in 2020.  Read More

Researchers: Mobile phone data ‘unprecedented solution’ to tracking people in disasters, epidemics

Oct,29,2014
by:
A new study finds that mobile phone data can be used for human population mapping in situations such as disasters, conflicts and epidemics due to its high level of penetration around the globe. Researchers called the proliferation of cellphones “an unprecedented solution” to the lack of timely information about people’s movements during crises. The use of mobile phone data for epidemiological research has been increasing. The Economist recently called for call data records (CDRs) from west Africa to be released to researchers to provide them with some data to analyze in order to better inform the fight against Ebola. Even though cell phone penetration is relatively low in remote rural areas, the publication argued, “CDRs are nevertheless better than simulations based on stale, unreliable statistics.Read More

Now that the Windows 10 preview bits are available for any interested parties to test, many -- but not all -- of the coming new features in the operating system have come to light.  On October 1, Microsoft officials blogged in a fairly vague way aboutsome of the coming features of potential interest to enterprise users. But these "under the covers" features were not explained or analyzed in detail -- at least up until now. Read More

AT&T Fires Employee for Security Breach
Oct,07,2014
by: Andrew Berg
AT&T is cleaning up the mess after an employee violated the company's security guidelines. In a letter sent to affected customers and obtained by Seeking Alpha, AT&T said that it had determined that in August an employee had wrongfully accessed customer accounts and would have been able to access customers' account information, social security number and driver's license number. AT&T confirmed that 1,600 customers were affected by the breach. As a result, AT&T is offering customers reversal of any charges that may have resulted from the situation, as well as a year's worth of free credit monitoring through CSID. According to a report from Reuters, about 1,600 customers were affected by the breach.  Read More

Sept,29,2014
by: Shane Schick
The average cost-per-install (CPI) of an iOS app is 85 percent higher than that of Android apps, according to InMobi. The company's State of Mobile App Downloads report is based on data from the second quarter of 2014, April 1 through June 30, on the InMobi network. The company uses a CPI index to calculate how much a developer or publisher would have to spend on mobile advertising to get a user to download something. The higher the CPI Index number, the more expensive for the developer.  Read More

Bringing together app designers and app developers on one team

Sept,30,2014
by: Phil Goldstein
Many independent application developers and smaller studios create apps by focusing on both the design and core development aspects of the app at the same time. They often divide up different tasks in the development process and then merge the work together to ensure that the app works the way they intended. But as apps and mobile games get more sophisticated, tools are emerging that are intended to address gaps in some of these skill sets and foster better collaboration among those who come more from a designer or development background.  Read More

Control Over Your Data Usage? Think Again
Sept,30,2014
by: Andrew Berg
After nervously handing over an iPhone 5 to my 12-year old, I knew I was going to have to do something to monitor the amount of data he was using. I didn't want to completely ban him from using data, but I certainly wanted to mitigate the possibility of overages.
I found AT&T's Smart Limits to be just the ticket. For a fee of $4.99 per month, the feature allowed me to set a limit for my son. I chose to put a data cap of 1 GB on his line. Smart Limits also allows for other settings, including limiting the number of text messages he can send, blocking certain numbers, and setting quiet time hours.  Read More

White House funds wireless training programs
Sept,29,2014

For PCIA President Jonathan Adelstein, this year’s State of the Union address was something of an epiphany. The former FCC commissioner realized that the White House was hard at work on an issue that is near and dear to the wireless industry: skills-based technical training. This week, that hard work came to fruition in the form of $450 million in job-driven training grants, with more than $5 million going directly to programs targeting wireless infrastructure. How to integrate emotional intelligence into mobile apps
Sept,22,2014
by: Shane Schick
The best way most mobile developers have to gauge how consumers feel about their app or mobile game is pretty simple: If they download it and use it, they're happy. If it gets uninstalled or is abandoned, they're not.  As issues around app retention, app engagement and the improvements of user experiences become more critical, though, a number of firms are beginning to create application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits (SDKs) aimed at analyzing a user's emotions much more directly.  Read More

Making sense of the IoT opportunity
Aug,27,2014
by: Sue Marek
The Internet of Things, or IoT, is perhaps the most talked about area of the wireless market today. Part of the reason for this excitement is that IoT could play role in nearly every industry--from automotive to healthcare to disaster recovery and more.
However, it's becoming increasing difficult to separate the reality from the hype. According to IDC, which defines IoT as a network of networks where things communicate without human interaction using IP connectivity, IoT solutions will be a $7.1 trillion business in 2020. And Gartner, which excludes PCs, smartphones and tablets from its IoT projections, anticipates there will be 26 billion connected units by 2020. Cisco and others predict much higher--around 50 billion connected devices by 2020.  Read More

Verizon, BlackBerry Offer Enterprises $150 Credit to Upgrade Devices
Aug,26,2014
by: Ben Munson
Verizon and BlackBerry together are offering a $150 bill credit to enterprises for each legacy device they upgrade to a BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
In a short promotional video, the companies confirm the credit can be used to buy BlackBerry technical support services, sign up for BBM Protected, or anything else enterprises have in mind. It appears the credit can be applied on a fairly large scale—the video points out that 1,000 upgraded devices means $150,000 in credit.
The deal applies to the BlackBerry Z10, Q10 and Z30 and requires new two-year service commitments, as well as activation fees of $35 or more. No details on if the upcoming BlackBerry Passport will factor into the deal.  Read More

iPad may hit laptop size
Aug,27,2014
by: MARTHA DEGRASSE
Apple is at work on a 12.9-inch iPad, according to Bloomberg. The current full-size iPad measures 9.7-inches diagonally. The report says production on the new slates won’t start until next year. The global tablet market is still smaller than the PC market, but for Apple, tablets are the company’s second largest revenue source after smartphones. Analysts at Gartner say Apple had more than a third of the worldwide tablet market last year, but its market share was down from a year earlier. And iPad sales were down year-on-year during both Q1 and Q2 this year.
Adding screen size to the iPad may be Apple’s response to slower sales. It may also be a play for enterprise customers who could substitute a large tablet for a laptop computer. Apple recently signed a partnership with IBM, which will help the Cupertino company market its mobile devices to business customers.  Read More

Sixty percent said they would share information from their cars in return for similar incentives (e.g., a free maintenance session).
Consumers are concerned about potential privacy violations related to wearable Internet devices, with 80% saying they have privacy concerns, and 57% saying reports of data hacks and breaches making them less likely to adopt wearable technology.  Read More
