Featured Report: RIM Releases BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, Offers Free Trial

CIO Mobile
Jan,23, 2013

by: Al Sacco
Today Research In Motion (RIM) released the first version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) 10 enterprise mobility management product, a week before it's expected to launch its brand new mobile platform, BlackBerry 10. RIM is offering organizations free, 60-day BES 10 trials for a limited time.

Before the release of BES 10, enterprises could use RIM's BlackBerry Mobile Fusion to manage BlackBerry PlayBook tablets and iOS and Android devices, but they had to use RIM's aging BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) software to manage older, pre-BlackBerry-10 smartphones. And RIM did not offer a product that enabled enterprises to manage the various infrastructure components using a single Web console.

PlayBook tablets could connect to corporate resources in the past without Mobile Fusion, thanks to support for Microsoft's ActiveSync. But Mobile Fusion, which is now part of BES 10, provide more security and management features, including its BlackBerry Balance service, which lets organizations separate corporate and personal information on BlackBerry 10 devices and PlayBook tablets so that administrators can manage that data separately.

2013 Predictions: Mobile devices overtake desktops

Jan,22,2013
by:Sven Hammar
1. A shift to a device-driven and faster Internet: By 2014, mobile Internet usage is expected to exceed desktop Internet usage. That means that in 2013 developers and marketers will be hard at work fine-tuning their mobile apps and websites to capitalize on this audience. Application testing tools will evolve to support any type of device with dynamic HTML versus device-specific code. Special protocols like WebSocket and SPDY will become mainstream.

Report: LTE subscribers to hit 198M in 2013, then skyrocket to 1B in 2016

Jan,23,2013
by:Phil Goldstein
The number of LTE subscribers worldwide is rising rapidly, and will continue to do so through the next several years, according to a new report from IHS iSuppli, which predicts that the number of LTE users worldwide will hit 198.1 million in 2013. Over the next few years LTE adoption is expected to surge to 1 billion users in 2016, the research firm said. The forecast is somewhat more aggressive than those from other analyst firms, but it underscores expectations that 2013 will be a strong year for LTE and that LTE adoption rates will speed up thereafter.

Mozilla launches two Firefox OS-based phones for developers

Jan,22, 2013
by: Mikael Ricknäs
Mozilla has launched Keon and Peak, two smartphones based on the web-centric Firefox OS platform. The first phones will start shipping in February, and have been developed in cooperation with Spanish operator Telefónica and Geeksphone, which is based in Madrid. No pricing has been announced, but Firefox OS has been pitched as low-cost competitor to Android. It can deliver a far better experience than Android at handset price points of roughly US$100, Telefónica said last year. The specifications provided by Mozilla also hint at low price tags. The Keon is powered by a 1GHz processor, has a 3.5-inch touchscreen and a 3-megapixel camera. The Peak is more powerful with its dual-core 1.2GHz processor. It also has a 4.3-inch screen and an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel camera on the front.

Featured Report: 7 Ways Mobile Apps Are Driving Revenue for Businesses

Mashable for Business
Jan,18, 2013

by: Ryan Matzner
From leveraging specific features like GPS all the way down to the mere fact that people are walking around with Internet-connected computers in their pockets, smartphones open a whole new world of opportunities for marketers at businesses from large and small. The following are some key ways businesses are getting an extra boost via mobile apps.

1. Geo-Targeted Push Notifications
Back in 2010, then-Google CEO Eric Schmidt talked about how the future of mobile would be autonomous and serendipitous. That is, mobile devices would present users with information about the world around them in an automatic way. In Schmidt’s example, as he walked around a particularly storied neighborhood of San Francisco, an app would passively display information about the history of places he passed. But the technology has become a reality, and a boon to business. Here are some ways businesses could use geo-targeted push notifications.

A band on tour could notify fans in a particular city that tickets there are nearly sold out or remind concert-goers to show up early so they don’t miss the opening act

A national chain could easily send city- or region-specific notifications about special offers based on what users in that area are interested in

A restaurant could boost loyalty by sending a special offer to customers who had been in the past year but not in the last two months

A store could announce a sale on umbrellas coupled with a weather alert to nearby users when it’s predicted to rain soon

Is Location Based Advertising The Future Of Mobile Marketing And Mobile Advertising?

Jan,17,2013
by:Steve Olenski
Along with content marketing I don’t think there’s a more ubiquitous phrase right now in the world of marketing and advertising than anything that starts with the word “mobile.” Everyone has their opinion, their idea, their beliefs and so on when it comes to mobile marketing and mobile advertising. Just this past October yours truly wrote a piece entitled Mobile Marketing – The Elephant In The Room For Marketers. As I wrote then and still believe today “The fact of the matter is that mobile marketing – despite all it’s continued hype and promise has been severely under utilized by marketers of all shapes and sizes.”

The most surprising thing about doctor review websites? 80% of physicians agree with their ratings

Jan,17, 2013
by: Stephanie Baum
As the healthcare industry begins to adopt some of the practices of the travel and leisure sector, physician review websites are one of the clearest indications of that trend. No one really expected physicians to like being reviewed like a beauty contest on their professional demeanor, the amount of time they make patients wait, cleanliness of their offices and medical knowledge. But a new report said that of the physicians who look at their reviews, 39 percent agree with their rating and 42 percent partially agree.
