Report: iOS app cost-per-install 85% higher than Android
Sept,29,2014
by: Shane Schick
The average cost-per-install (CPI) of an iOS app is 85 percent higher than that of Android apps, according to InMobi. The company's State of Mobile App Downloads report is based on data from the second quarter of 2014, April 1 through June 30, on the InMobi network. The company uses a CPI index to calculate how much a developer or publisher would have to spend on mobile advertising to get a user to download something. The higher the CPI Index number, the more expensive for the developer.  Read More

Bringing together app designers and app developers on one team

Sept,30,2014
by: Phil Goldstein
Many independent application developers and smaller studios create apps by focusing on both the design and core development aspects of the app at the same time. They often divide up different tasks in the development process and then merge the work together to ensure that the app works the way they intended. But as apps and mobile games get more sophisticated, tools are emerging that are intended to address gaps in some of these skill sets and foster better collaboration among those who come more from a designer or development background.  Read More

Control Over Your Data Usage? Think Again
Sept,30,2014
by: Andrew Berg
After nervously handing over an iPhone 5 to my 12-year old, I knew I was going to have to do something to monitor the amount of data he was using. I didn't want to completely ban him from using data, but I certainly wanted to mitigate the possibility of overages.
I found AT&T's Smart Limits to be just the ticket. For a fee of $4.99 per month, the feature allowed me to set a limit for my son. I chose to put a data cap of 1 GB on his line. Smart Limits also allows for other settings, including limiting the number of text messages he can send, blocking certain numbers, and setting quiet time hours.  Read More

White House funds wireless training programs
Sept,29,2014
by:
For PCIA President Jonathan Adelstein, this year’s State of the Union address was something of an epiphany. The former FCC commissioner realized that the White House was hard at work on an issue that is near and dear to the wireless industry: skills-based technical training. This week, that hard work came to fruition in the form of $450 million in job-driven training grants, with more than $5 million going directly to programs targeting wireless infrastructure. How to integrate emotional intelligence into mobile apps
Sept,22,2014
by: Shane Schick
The best way most mobile developers have to gauge how consumers feel about their app or mobile game is pretty simple: If they download it and use it, they're happy. If it gets uninstalled or is abandoned, they're not.  As issues around app retention, app engagement and the improvements of user experiences become more critical, though, a number of firms are beginning to create application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits (SDKs) aimed at analyzing a user's emotions much more directly.  Read More

Artificial Intelligence That Imitates Children’s Learning
Sept,23,2014by: University of Gothenburg
The computer programs used in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) are highly specialized. They can for example fly airplanes, play chess or assemble cars in controlled industrial environments. However, a research team from Gothenburg, Sweden, has now been able to create an AI programme that can learn how to solve problems in many different areas. The program is designed to imitate certain aspects of children's cognitive development. Read More

Nokia to bring HERE mapping platform to Android via partnership with Samsung
Aug,29,2014
by: Phil Goldstein
Nokia (NYSE:NOK) said it will bring its HERE mapping platform to devices that run Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android software starting with Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphones. The deal represents a major win for Nokia since the company sold its devices business to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) in April.
According to Nokia, thanks to a licensing deal with Samsung, a HERE beta for Android will be made available for free in October when Samsung rolls out its Gear S smart watch, which runs on the Tizen platform but also supports HERE. That should strengthen the link between the wearable device and Samsung's smartphones, which can be paired together via Bluetooth. Read more

Microsoft finally cracks down on deceptive Windows Store 'crap apps'
Aug,28,2014
by: Mark Hachman
So-called deceptive “crap apps” have always plagued the Windows Store. But now, Microsoft appears to be finally ready to do something about them.
In a blog post late Wednesday, Microsoft said that it had removed 1,500 deceptively named apps as part of a policy shift to crack down on developers “trying to game the system with misleading titles or descriptions,” the company said.
A year ago, Microsoft publicly said that the Windows Store has more than 100,000 apps, and it’s unlikely that that number has climbed higher than 200,000 apps by now. But as far back as Oct. 2012—before Windows 8 even launched—analysts were pointing out that the fate of the Windows 8 app store didn’t need a large number of apps to be successful. It needed quality, and that’s not what Microsoft delivered. Instead, consumers are faced with numerous clone apps and paid “alternatives” to freeware, both outcomes that give those users a bad taste in their mouths.  Read More

Apple Updates Mobile App Ad-serving Guidelines

Sept,01,2014
by: Tim Maytom

Apple has released new, stricter guidelines for developers submitting apps to the iTunes store designed to serve ads.
Under the new rules, Apple will reject mobile apps that don’t use Advertising Identifiers, specifically the IDFA, a unique ID for each iOS device that is the only way to offer targetd ads across the network. Apps may also be rejected if they use the IDFA but do not display ads properly or have a built-in advertising, or indicate they don’t use the IDFA when they do.
With more and more developers using deep linking to help people discover relevant content within their apps, identifying content-related ads in apps has become increasingly important. Apple has expanded its iAd advertising network into 16 countries and regions, moving into Russia and Switzerland most recently.  Read More

Making sense of the IoT opportunity
Aug,27,2014
by: Sue Marek
The Internet of Things, or IoT, is perhaps the most talked about area of the wireless market today. Part of the reason for this excitement is that IoT could play role in nearly every industry--from automotive to healthcare to disaster recovery and more.
However, it's becoming increasing difficult to separate the reality from the hype. According to IDC, which defines IoT as a network of networks where things communicate without human interaction using IP connectivity, IoT solutions will be a $7.1 trillion business in 2020. And Gartner, which excludes PCs, smartphones and tablets from its IoT projections, anticipates there will be 26 billion connected units by 2020. Cisco and others predict much higher--around 50 billion connected devices by 2020.  Read More

Verizon, BlackBerry Offer Enterprises $150 Credit to Upgrade Devices
Aug,26,2014
by: Ben Munson
Verizon and BlackBerry together are offering a $150 bill credit to enterprises for each legacy device they upgrade to a BlackBerry 10 smartphone.
In a short promotional video, the companies confirm the credit can be used to buy BlackBerry technical support services, sign up for BBM Protected, or anything else enterprises have in mind. It appears the credit can be applied on a fairly large scale—the video points out that 1,000 upgraded devices means $150,000 in credit.
The deal applies to the BlackBerry Z10, Q10 and Z30 and requires new two-year service commitments, as well as activation fees of $35 or more. No details on if the upcoming BlackBerry Passport will factor into the deal.  Read More

iPad may hit laptop size
Aug,27,2014
by: MARTHA DEGRASSE
Apple is at work on a 12.9-inch iPad, according to Bloomberg. The current full-size iPad measures 9.7-inches diagonally. The report says production on the new slates won’t start until next year. The global tablet market is still smaller than the PC market, but for Apple, tablets are the company’s second largest revenue source after smartphones. Analysts at Gartner say Apple had more than a third of the worldwide tablet market last year, but its market share was down from a year earlier. And iPad sales were down year-on-year during both Q1 and Q2 this year.
Adding screen size to the iPad may be Apple’s response to slower sales. It may also be a play for enterprise customers who could substitute a large tablet for a laptop computer. Apple recently signed a partnership with IBM, which will help the Cupertino company market its mobile devices to business customers.  Read More

When the FCC gambles on number portability, consumers stand to lose
Aug,17,2014
by: JERRY JAMES
The Federal Communications Commission will soon make a critical decision regarding a vital component of the U.S. telecommunications infrastructure: selecting the administrator for local number portability. Portability enables U.S. consumers to keep their phone numbers when they switch carriers and supports the routing of virtually every voice call and text message sent across the country The FCC will decide whether to stay with current vendor Neustar or direct the industry to transition to a new vendor, Telcordia, a subsidiary of Ericsson. The contract with Neustar is currently scheduled to expire in July 2015, about 10 months from now.  Read More

'Like' it or not, Facebook's developer program change is the right decision

According to Facebook, all app developers using its platform should be able to honestly quote a version of Sally Field's famous Oscar acceptance speech: "They 'like' me! They really, really 'like' me!" Earlier this month, Facebook made some significant updates to its Platform Policies under games and proper use. The first one comes as no surprise: In keeping with recent moves by Google and increased threats from regulatory bodies, Facebook is requiring developers to be up front about any in-app purchase requirements in so-called free-to-play (F2P) games. Reality Check: Making voice over Wi-Fi a reality
Aug,15,2014

Wi-Fi is now an essential part of our smartphone and tablet-enabled lifestyle. Today, more than two-thirds of our monthly wireless data is consumed over Wi-Fi, and all signs are that this proportion will continue to grow. So while the traditional, cellular-centric view of the industry positions Wi-Fi as a support to the mobile network, there is an alternative and provocative perspective: we actually use the cellular network as in-fill during the time we spend away from our Wi-Fi connections, be they in the home, the office or our favourite coffee shop. Is the smartphone killing off society's social skills?

Aug,06,2014

Did ever notice how sometimes things can seem absolutely normal, until you look around and realize you could be in a Doctor Who episode? Last night was like that. It was late and I was at a local pub celebrating a friend's birthday. I'm not much of a pub creature. I sowed my wild oats a long time ago. Sowed them, harvested them, cooked them, and made meal out of them. But I'm -- quite thankfully -- past those days.   As a result, I only find myself in a pub-like atmosphere on those few occasions when I didn't plan far enough in advance to have a good excuse to get out of a social event. That means I manage to avoid having to go out on the town more than once every two or three months. Read More

Mavenir looks to moderate NFV expectations as hype swells
Aug,04,2014
by: DAN MEYER
Network function virtualization has become a significant talking point across the mobile telecommunications space, with most wireless operators and equipment vendors looking more closely at the technology. That attention comes from the potential cost savings and potential improvements in rolling out new services that wireless carriers are always looking to take advantage of. IDC recently released a report predicting that network virtualization was “set to revolutionize the telecom industry as it transforms the culture and operational infrastructure, as well as the fabric of legacy proprietary infrastructures that have, until now, dominated the space.” That followed a report from Maravedis-Rethink released earlier this year that predicted early three-fourth of mobile operators will deploy some form of NFV by 2018, noting the move to NFV will be one of the most important ways carriers will “transform their cost base and their service delivery in the next few years.”   Read More

Verizon to FCC: Throttling Unlimited Users “Widely Accepted”

Verizon has officially responded to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler after the Commissioner criticized the carrier’s decision to start slowing data speeds for some unlimited plan customers on its LTE network. The United States’ largest carrier called the practice “widely accepted,” according to Reuters. Verizon CEO Dan Mead, to whom the FCC’s letter was addressed, said the policy was in line with FCC principles. Verizon calls the practice “network optimization” and says that it will only apply to the top five percent of users on unlimited plans and will only take effect when the network is congested. The carrier says the policy will “ensure the fair allocation of capacity.”   Read More
