Microsoft has decided to follow Apple and Google by trying to digitize customers’ wallets. At an event for developers about its upcoming Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system, Microsoft said the software will support near-field communications, or NFC, a wireless technology used for digital-payments systems. It’s also including a new wallet program that will rely upon mobile operators for information such as credit and debit cards and loyalty and membership cards. “The goal is to replace the physical wallet in your pocket,” said Joe Belfiore, a manager in the Windows Phone team. “It’s the most complete wallet experience.” Google, which began its Google Wallet service last year, had most of the information on specialized chips in the phone. Some mobile operators didn’t like that because customers would want to move their information from one device to the next, so the operators disabled the software as a result. Microsoft said that by working with operators, it should avoid those issues.

Women sway more men to their Facebook recommendations than they do members of their own gender, suggests a survey that may help advertisers hone their online pitches. Women are also less susceptible to influence. The research, published in the journal Science, tracked the use of an application to see whether one’s Facebook friends would adopt it. When women sent friends a notification that they had used the app, about 1 1/2 times more male friends acted on the information than females. Men, however, were 49 percent more influential in general.

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — In this small city about an hour from Manhattan, pregnant teenagers, laid-off professionals and day laborers without insurance receive care at a community health center that has been part of the social fabric here for nearly four decades. Because of the sweeping federal health care law passed two years ago, the center, part of the Hudson River HealthCare network, received a $4.5 million grant last month to expand. It plans to add six more medical and seven more dental exam rooms, allowing it to see as many as 5,000 additional patients, many of whom are without insurance, on Medicaid or have limited coverage. An additional 730 community centers or so like it are to be renovated or built across the country in the next two years for patients like that.

The rate of growth in Medicare and commercial insurer revenue for hospitals and healthcare professionals accelerated during the year that ended in April, according to the Standard & Poor's Healthcare Economic Indices. The rating agency's healthcare composite index for the 12-month period ended in April climbed 6.14%. That's compared with the 5.65% increase for the year that ended in March. Medicare fee-for-service revenue for hospitals and healthcare professionals increased 2.6% during the 12 months ended in April and commercial revenue climbed 8.46%, according to the indices, which estimate the average per capita change in revenue.

Using a Web-based, electronic patient scheduling system without appropriate privacy protections has led to an Arizona medical practice reaching a $100,000 settlement with the federal government over potential privacy and security violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, HHS announced.
Phoenix Cardiac Surgery, of Phoenix and Prescott, Ariz., agreed to pay HHS and take corrective actions to protect patient information after an investigation by HHS' Office for Civil Rights, which has privacy and security rule enforcement duties under HIPAA.

Arrest in S.C. Medicaid Info Breach

A former South Carolina state employee has been arrested for allegedly transferring personal information about more than 228,000 Medicaid recipients to his personal e-mail account. The information inappropriately transferred in the breach incident, according to the South Carolina Department of Health & Human Services, includes names, phone numbers, addresses, birth dates and Medicaid ID numbers. For almost 23,000 of the affected patients, Medicare numbers, which contain Social Security numbers, also were transferred. No private medical records or financial information was involved, authorities say. Nevertheless, the state is offering all those affected a year's worth of free identity protection services.

Microsoft’s Surface Only Half the Battle

Microsoft yesterday unveiled the Surface, a new Windows-based 10-inch tablet aimed directly at consumers. The device itself is a milestone and a showpiece for Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system, but will the new slate be enough to compete with Apple’s iPad? The Surface comes in two variations. Windows Surface for Windows RT comes running a version of Windows 8 made specifically for ARM processors. The Surface for Windows RT packs a NVIDIA Tegra-based ARM chip. The second version comes running Windows 8 Pro, and includes an Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor. There are slight variations in the specs of each model. The Windows 8 Pro version, for instance, is slightly thicker at13.5 mm than its RT counterpart.

Report: RIM starts shedding jobs as part of restructuring

Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) has started trimming jobs as part of a broader restructuring and streamlining of its business operations, according to multiple reports. Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported that RIM has begun laying off small batches of employees as it cuts costs. The report said some employees at RIM's quality control, operations and parts departments have been among those whose jobs were cut. RIM executives, including CEO Thorsten Heins, have publicly said they are aiming to cut operating expenses by $1 billion by the end of the fiscal year.
