Video: Likeable’s Dave Kerpen tells you how to be amazing in social media

Word of Mouth.org

by: Dave Kerpen
Social media can be an incredibly powerful word of mouth amplifier. But, how do you show everyone your brand is worth talking about? For starters, stop talking about yourself and pay attention to what your customers are saying about you instead. After you listen carefully, respond — even to the negative stuff. Say thank you to people who say nice things about you. Stop selling and start having conversations. In the video below, Dave Kerpen, CEO at Likeable Media, shows you how to rock at social media by changing how you perceive this word of mouth marketing tool. He explains how not responding is worse than hanging up on a customer, why saying “I’m sorry” is not an admission of guilt, and why customer service is marketing.

Even Small Players Can Seize the Day With an App Strategy

Oct,10,2012
by: Eilene zimmerman
In the summer of 2010, Sheri Gurock, co-founder of Magic Beans, a retailer specializing in toys and baby gear, decided to join the mobile app craze. But her timing may have been a little off. Ms. Gurock deployed an app that allowed in-store customers to bypass the cash registers and check out their purchases themselves, on their mobile devices. Magic Beans got the app at no charge by working with its creator and agreeing to be a retail testing ground.

Is Mobile Currency Really Making Cash Obsolete?

Oct, 11, 2012
by: Adam Broitman
he value of the dollar bill is not derived from its material composition; it's merely a symbol that represents a cultural understanding of value. Howard Rheingold explained the overlapping origins of language and currency. The origins of writing actually came from accounting. The symbols of agricultural civilizations enabled these large empires to emerge for the first time, with hierarchies and work gangs, and irrigation and large-scale building projects. The people who kept track of things, the priests or the rulers, began to make deals. If you deposited 50 bushels of wheat in a granary, they would get you 50 little clay tokens and make it into an envelope.

Oct,09,2012
by: Dan Bowman
Electronic health record use in physician practices was linked to improved patient care, according to research published this month in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The study examined ambulatory practices in the Hudson Valley of New York with a median size of four physicians. Quality of care was found to be significantly improved in hemoglobin A1c testing for diabetics, breast cancer screenings, Chlamydia screenings and colorectal cancer screenings. The researchers looked at results for a total of 466 physicians and 74,618 unique patients. Forty-four percent of the physicians (204) had adopted EHRs, while 56 percent (262) continued to use paper records.

Oct,11,2012
by: Joseph Goedert
A large coalition of providers, software vendors, health information exchanges, states and public agencies has launched a program to develop test standards to certify electronic health record and HIE products that use a standardized method for exchanging health information. The goal is plug-and-play HIE, with initial benefits expected to be seen within nine to 12 months. The initiative will expand work done by the Nationwide Health Information Network Exchange, a program within the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT that brought together stakeholders to test a common set of specifications for information exchange

Small, Remote Hospitals Turning to Telehealth To Cut Costs, Improve Care

Oct,09,2012
Small and remote hospitals increasingly are adopting telehealth technology to improve patient care and reduce costs, the New York Times reports. Peter Yellowlees -- director of the health informatics program at the University of California-Davis and a board member of the American Telemedicine Association -- said, "There has been a shift in belief that telemedicine can only be used for rural areas to a belief that it can be used anywhere," adding, "Now, you can buy a $100 webcam and do high-quality videoconferencing."

CMS violated data breach notification requirements

Oct, 11, 2012
by: Julie Bird
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services failed to meet federal notification requirements when its Medicare patient database was breached, or offer much help to beneficiaries whose protected health information was compromised, an audit by the Department of Health & Human Services' Inspector General found. CMS had 14 breaches of protected health information (PHI) between Sept. 23, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2011, affecting 13,775 Medicare beneficiaries, according to the HHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The beneficiaries were notified, but CMS failed to meet several notification requirements detailed in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, OIG found.

Featured Report: Two-thirds of small businesses believe mobility = competitive edge

ZD Net
Oct,08,2012
by: Heather Clancy
For good or bad, I equate the term "entrepreneur" with small-business owners - because of the can-do ingenuity many of them use to get their jobs done. I personally believe that the mass movement to embrace mobile technologies is something that small businesses have been advocating for years, because it gave them a leg up to compete with larger companies. My personal bias is validated by a new survey of small-business users and IT professionals by CDW that shows almost two-thirds of them believe their company would suffer competitively if someone were to confiscate their mobile devices. An even higher number (94 percent) believe that, at the very least, mobile devices such as smartphones, notebooks and tablets make them more efficient, according to CDW's 2012 Small Business Mobility Report.

T-Mobile's Ray: Network issues complicate potential Sprint/MetroPCS deal

Oct,09,2012
by: Phil Goldstein
A top T-Mobile USA executive discounted any potential deal between Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) and MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) on the grounds that it would create a new network mess for Sprint. Rumors have recently swirled that Sprint may be considering a counterbid to try and outmaneuver Deutsche Telekom in its attempts to have T-Mobile swallow MetroPCS. At a Sanford C. Bernstein investor conference Monday, T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray said Sprint's network is based on a "dying" technology and that T-Mobile's aim is not to run two separate networks, as Sprint did with Nextel's IDEN network after its 2005 acquisition. "This is not about combining CDMA with GSM band technology," Ray said. "We're going to close the CDMA network down."
