Why You Shouldn’t Forget About Pinterest

Dec,08,2014
by:Michael Kwan
As an online entrepreneur, Internet marketer or professional blogger, you’ll oftentimes find yourself on a variety of different websites, networking both with like-minded individuals and with your “tribe.” While it’s certainly debatable whether or not you should care about Ello, it’s pretty obvious that the bigger social networks deserve your attention. Building up your audience on social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter only makes sense, but then there’s Pinterest too.

Many people, mostly male, have immediately dismissed Pinterest as a site for women to share home baking recipes and flirty outfit ideas, but there’s so much more to the image-focused social network. Indeed, you might remember a post on this blog talking about how you can make $1,000 a day on Pinterest by sharing the right kind of content in the right kind of way. Read More

Dec,04,2014
By Staff
Yahoo’s US mobile ad revenues are not only material now, they’re significant, according to a new forecast from eMarketer. Yahoo reported its mobile revenues for the first time in Q3 2014, and eMarketer estimates that the company will take nearly 3.2% of the $18.99 billion US mobile advertising market in 2014, launching itself into the mix as a competitor. Next year, Yahoo’s US mobile ad revenues will account for 3.74% of the country’s mobile ad market, pushing past Twitter for the first time—which will take 3.69% share in 2015—according to eMarketer. By 2016, Yahoo’s share will near 4.2%, which still trails Google and Facebook by a wide margin. However, the company’s 1-percentage-point gain from 2014 through 2016 represents the largest among companies that we tracked for this latest forecast. Read More

Microsoft's Torque Wearable App Heads to Android Phones
Dec,07,2014
by: Pedro Hernandez

In the mobile waters, Microsoft is swimming against the current somewhat. The Redmond, Wash.-based tech giant announced on Dec. 5 that its Torque app is making the leap from wrist-worn Android Wear devices to Android smartphones. Since Torque's debut in October, Android smartphone users have been clamoring for the ability to shake and search, according to Microsoft. Today, the company is honoring their request. "We have incorporated that feedback into Torque 2.0 and added support for Torque on Android phones," said Microsoft's Torque Team in a blog post. The update also offers "new answers including local events and flight status, a way to launch applications with the twist gesture, and more reliable gesture and voice recognition."  Read More

Big-Box Stores Like Target Think These New Apps Can Defeat Amazon
Dec,01,2014
by: Lauren Johnson

Not so long ago, retailers struggled mightily to direct shoppers away from browsers and over to their newfangled branded apps without much success. This holiday season, however, might prove to be the apps' tipping point thanks to more sophisticated tools at retailers' disposal, including mobile mapping, payments, price-comparison tools, image recognition features and beacon technology. In fact, these new features might even give retailers a fighting chance against Amazon.
Target, Walmart and Kohl's are all traditional big-box retailers with new, souped-up mobile apps this year aimed at steering shoppers away from Amazon. Target, for example, recently launched store-specific mapping software that helps shoppers navigate its sprawling retail centers. Read More

Image recognition increasingly an app must-have as scanning gains ground
Nov,26,2014
by: Alex Samuely

With major retailers such as Amazon, Target and Macy’s offering image recognition within their mobile applications, the technology is likely to become a must-have although more sophisticated scan-to-shop deployments could remain limited.
Scan-to-buy options enabling consumers to shop directly from a retailer’s catalogs, print ads and in-store signage are increasingly a standard offering. However, more retailers are also scrambling to compete against Amazon and showrooming by and employing image recognition technology that allows consumers to point their phone at any object and receive suggestions for similar products within the brand app. Read More

Twitter Invites Advertisers To Create Offers
Nov,26,2014
by: Gavin O'Malley
Expanding its ecommerce efforts, Twitter is inviting advertisers to create credit-card-connected promotions, and share them with users directly in their timelines.
With their credit cards, users can redeem the new “Twitter Offers” in stores without the need for a coupon or numerical code.
Twitter Offers also represents a new way for marketers to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns across channels, according to Tarun Jain, group product manager at Twitter.
“Advertisers will be able to attribute redemptions directly to their campaigns on Twitter, so that they can effectively measure the ROI from their promotions, even when redemption happens offline,” Jain explained in a blog post on Tuesday.
Twitter is bullish about its place in the ecommerce ecosystem. Most notably, the social giant recently began rolling out a “buy” button in tweets. Read More

Gallup Suggests Health App Adoption Strategies
Nov,05,2014
Greg Goth

Recent research from Gallup not only indicates the popularity of mobile device-based health apps is accelerating, but also dissects which types of apps are linked to specific types of well-being."Some types of apps are more closely related to high well-being outcomes than others,” say Gallup researchers Dan Witters and Sanjeeta Agrawal. "While use of running map apps and apps for healthy restaurant menu options are mutually highly linked to both social and physical well-being, other apps are more uniquely aligned. Apps for water intake and healthy recipes are strongly linked to social well-being benefits, while running maps and personal training apps are strongly associated with physical well-being."  Read More

Does social media boost healthcare careers?
Nov,03,2014
by: Zack Budryk
Many nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) believe social media use has helped their careers, according to a new survey by The Clinical Advisor.
Just under half of respondents (45 percent) said they used social media in a career context, while more than two-thirds (68 percent) reported using it for personal matters. Of those who used it for business, 28 percent told the publication they feel it helps NPs' and PAs' careers, with no respondents thinking it harmed their careers, while 12 percent said it didn't actively help and 13 percent didn't know. Breaking responses down by specific social networks, LinkedIn was the most commonly used for strictly business purposes (48 percent). It was followed by Google Plus, which 36 percent of respondents used specifically for business purposes, and Facebook, with 26 percent.  Read More

Conference Highlights Progress on Different Fronts in Connected Health Technology
Nov,03,2014
by: Andy Oram
Technology is not the focus of the Connected Health Symposium, but technical advances play a major role there because of the potential for digital technology to help health care meet its broad goals of listening to patients and coordinating care among these patients, their family members and the professional team.In some ways, the technology is far more advanced than the health care providers who could benefit from it, and it is up to those health care institutions to evolve organizationally and culturally. But on the other hand, much technology looks good only on the surface and quickly comes to shame when connected to real-life workflows and patient needs.   Read More

Health insurance upstart Oscar competes on telehealth, user experience
Nov,05,2014
by: Jonah Comstock
In May, Oscar, the New York-based individual-only insurance plan raised $80 million at close to a $1 billion valuation. That brought the company’s total funding to $150 million. It’s an impressive feat for a small startup attempting to compete in health insurance, which is so thoroughly dominated by huge legacy players. At IBF’s Digital Healthcare Innovation Summit in Boston, Oscar co-founder Kevin Nazemi spoke with Bessemer Venture Partner’s Steve Kraus about how a focus on user experience — and a fortuitous market opportunity in the Affordable Care Act — helped catapult Oscar into the national spotlight. He also announced for the first time that the company will be expanding from just New York into New Jersey.  Read More

When it Comes to Mobile, IT is Out of Touch
Oct,29,2014

by:Matt Weinberger

"I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you!" warned Abraham Simpson -- of the Springfield Simpsons -- way back in 1996. It's true, and like it or not, mobile is the new gamemaker in business -- if you haven't adopted a mobile strategy that enables productivity on the go, rest assured that your competitors have. And even if you have, there's an arms race to build better, more user-friendly applications, faster. If that doesn't cause enough stress, a new study by app development platform Appcelerator and IDC Research suggests that IT departments may not be as in control of the mobile agenda as they thought, with developers and IT pros reporting drastically different experiences. The Vague, Undefined Promise of 5G
Oct,27,2014
by: Andrew Berg
The term 5G is as yet completely meaningless aside from the fact that the moniker is the obvious successor to the current status quo of 4G. But it's also grossly obtuse because we don't even know on what criteria the ITU will base its definition of 5G. I spoke with Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas about a recently published white paper that addresses first steps for the development of and investment in 5G technology. "It's a question I'm asked a lot, and more often than not people are asking whether 5G is about speed," Pearson said. "My answer is no. It's going to be about improving and enhancing what we have today with LTE-Advanced as we look at what the mobile requirements are out in 2020.  Read More

Researchers: Mobile phone data ‘unprecedented solution’ to tracking people in disasters, epidemics

Oct,29,2014
by:
A new study finds that mobile phone data can be used for human population mapping in situations such as disasters, conflicts and epidemics due to its high level of penetration around the globe. Researchers called the proliferation of cellphones “an unprecedented solution” to the lack of timely information about people’s movements during crises. The use of mobile phone data for epidemiological research has been increasing. The Economist recently called for call data records (CDRs) from west Africa to be released to researchers to provide them with some data to analyze in order to better inform the fight against Ebola. Even though cell phone penetration is relatively low in remote rural areas, the publication argued, “CDRs are nevertheless better than simulations based on stale, unreliable statistics.Read More

Intel, Samsung Electronics, Broadcom and other wireless and technology players joined forces to create a new group aimed at coming up with an open-source standard to connect devices to each other across operating systems and wireless protocols as part of the Internet of Things.
The new group, the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), will serve a similar purpose to the AllSeen Alliance, which uses an open-source implementation of Qualcomm's (NASDAQ:QCOM) AllJoyn framework to connect devices to one another regardless of their underlying proprietary technology or communications protocols. AllSeen has been mostly focused on the connected home, while the OIC wants to broaden its scope to include the automotive and workplace settings.   Read More

Report: Sprint Vetting Plans That Undercut AT&T, Verizon

Sprint is testing out family data plans that undercut similar offerings from AT&T and Verizon, according to CNET. The trials—reportedly running San Diego, Portland, Ore. and Las Vegas—are charging per device and offering data buckets ranging from 1 GB to 60 GB. Sprint’s 1 GB plan is $20, only $5 less than similar plans at AT&T and Verizon. But Sprint’s 10 GB plan is $40 less and its 30 GB plan is $95 less than the same deals at AT&T and Verizon. Under Sprint’s test plans, customers can get 60 GB for $225, the same price AT&T and Verizon charge for 30 GB.  Read More

In-app purchase fraud: It may be worse than developers think

July,08,2014
by: Shane Schick
There's only one thing better than gaining hundreds or even thousands of users for an app or mobile game, and that's when they start spending money inside the app. Unless, of course, the spending isn't what it seems.  As developers have shifted away from a monetization model based on paid downloads to "freemium" or free to play (F2P) approaches, many of them are looking at in-app purchasing (IAP) as a better way to create a revenue stream for their work. However, there's one major concern that could drag on both big and small app vendors: in-app fraud. Read More

Report: Microsoft Working on Wearable Technology

July,03,2014
by: Ryan Martin
Microsoft could be the latest giant of tech to jump into the burgeoning wearable technology market, as circulating reports say Redmond is working on a fitness tracker/smart watch to be released later this year. According to CNET, Microsoft has been developing a wearable device for some time, but it now appears ready to move beyond the R&D phase. Sources close to Microsoft say the company is modeling the design and pricing of its device on Samsung’s $199 Gear Fit, which launched earlier this year as part of a full lineup of Samsung devices. It’s believed that the wrist device will not only track activity such as steps, exercise and sleep, but also feature some of the capabilities of a smart watch such as displaying the time, text messages and emails. With a late 2014 launch Microsoft could be once again going directly up against old rival Apple as it’s expected to also release the hotly anticipated iWatch in the coming months. Read More
