Rumor Mill: Google unveiling Android 4.2 at Oct. 29 event

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) will unveil the next iteration of its Android mobile operating system at an Oct. 29 event that also will spotlight two new devices, The Next Web reports.According to a source with knowledge of Google's plans, the new Android 4.2 will retain the Jelly Bean branding attached to its direct predecessor, Android 4.1. (Many pundits anticipated Android 4.2 would roll out as Android Key Lime Pie; all versions of Android are given dessert-themed nicknames administered in alphabetical order.) The revamped OS will include a new widget enabling direct access to the Google Play digital storefront, as well as customization options enabling families, small businesses and others who share the same tablet device to set up individual login profiles, complete with their own app libraries and email accounts.

Apple unveils iPad mini, adds support for Sprint

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) put the rumors to rest and unveiled a smaller, 7.9-inch iPad tablet, dubbed "iPad mini," bowing to the pressure to compete with smaller 7-inch tablets and throwing down the gauntlet to the likes of Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Amazon.The smaller iPad has a 7.9-inch screen and the same resolution as the iPad 2, with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. The iPad mini will have Apple's dual-core A5 processor, LTE, a FaceTime HD camera and the Lightning dock connector used in the iPhone 5. The iPad mini will start at $329 with Wi-Fi-only connectivity and 16 GB of storage, $429 for 32 GB of storage and $529 for the 64 GB version. The iPad mini with LTE will start at $459 with 16 GB of storage, $559 for the 32 GB version and $659 for the 64 GB model. Pre-orders for the Wi-Fi model will start Friday, and the gadget will be available Nov. 2. Two weeks later the cellular versions will star shipping.

Motorola Solutions, Motorola Mobility Fortunes Still Divergent

Before Motorola split itself apart in early 2011, its infrastructure business had long outperformed its handset division, posting regular profits as its smartphone unit sunk further into the red. That trend is still in place nearly two years after the company's separation. Motorola Solutions posted healthy third quarter results today, a marked contrast to the handset business it was once combined with. Motorola Solutions’ profits nearly doubled year-over-year to $206 million as sales ticked upwards to $2.15 billion on strength in its government unit. It increased its full-year forecast for sales growth, pegging the increase at between 6 percent and 6.5 percent.

Will Sprint Avoid Using Huawei Infrastructure?

Now that SoftBank has officially announced it will be acquiring 70 percent of Sprint, Sprint needs to think about how it will continue to develop moving forward. And it looks like the carrier might decide to avoid using Huawei network equipment because of security concerns from the U.S. government. According to the Financial Times, Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse noted, “Sprint is a big supplier to the U.S. government and that aside, I wouldn’t put in any equipment that would raise security concerns.” Sprint has already excluded Huawei from bidding on its network upgrade after the U.S. commerce secretary expressed concerns to Hesse about the vendor. Huawei is a supplier to Softbank, however according to CEO Masayoshi Son Huawei is not a significant player, and said he was aware of the issues the U.S. government is currently having with Huawei and would respect any possible outcome.
