$400,000 Penalty in HIPAA Case |
Healthcare Info Security May,22,2013 Howard Anderson Federal regulators have demonstrated yet again that an investigation of a relatively small breach incident can result in a substantial penalty for HIPAA non-compliance. Idaho State University has agreed to pay $400,000 as part of a resolution agreement stemming from an incident it reported in August 2011 that potentially could have exposed information on 17,500 patients at the university's Pocatello Family Medicine Clinic. Modern Healthcare
May,22,2013 by:Joseph Conn Key federal programs to boost electronic health-record system use passed a milestone last month as more than half of physicians and other "eligible professionals" have received incentive payments for attesting to the adoption of a certified EHR system.
As of April, 191,305 physicians and EPs have received EHR incentive payments from Medicare, while 88,903 have received payments from Medicaid and 11,117 from Medicare Advantage under programs created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Read More |
EHR Incentive Program
Healthcare Professionals Did You Know? Non-hospital-based physicians and other eligible professionals can obtain incentive payments of as much as $44,000 under Medicare or $63,750 under Medicaid. Under both Medicare and Medicaid, eligible hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementing and meaningfully using certified EHR technology.
About two-thirds (65 percent) of hospitals and 32 percent of office-based physicians plan to enroll in meaningful use programs by the end of 2012 in order to receive the maximum incentives, according to survey results announced Thursday morning. Fewer federal dollars will be available to hospitals and doctors that wait to adopt EHR technology, and failure to meaningfully use EHRs starting in 2015 will result in Medicare penalties. Watch this video about how to register for the EHR Incentive program.
