Integrating small practices

Consider a small primary care practice with five physicians using its own EHR. While they are currently operating "efficiently" in their own minds, why would they consider integrating into a larger Health Information Exchange (HIE) system? This is a common question for many small practices today as it is critical to understand the benefits. An HIE focuses on the storage, analysis and transmission of patient data, often for the purposes of broad-based population management or specific transitions of care. HIEs require the ability to pull or receive data from a wide variety of clinical sources including hospital information systems, laboratory management systems and practice-based EHRs. In today’s world of interoperability, it is important to have individual practices unified in an HIE to drive better and more efficient care - HIEs are only as valuable as the “network effect” they drive, and small practices make up the majority of ambulatory care in the United States.

EHR Incentive Program
Healthcare Professionals Did You Know? Non-hospital-based physicians and other eligible professionals can obtain incentive payments of as much as $44,000 under Medicare or $63,750 under Medicaid. Under both Medicare and Medicaid, eligible hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementing and meaningfully using certified EHR technology.

About two-thirds (65 percent) of hospitals and 32 percent of office-based physicians plan to enroll in meaningful use programs by the end of 2012 in order to receive the maximum incentives, according to survey results announced Thursday morning. Fewer federal dollars will be available to hospitals and doctors that wait to adopt EHR technology, and failure to meaningfully use EHRs starting in 2015 will result in Medicare penalties. Watch this video about how to register for the EHR Incentive program.
