Gallup Suggests Health App Adoption Strategies
Nov,05,2014
Greg Goth

Recent research from Gallup not only indicates the popularity of mobile device-based health apps is accelerating, but also dissects which types of apps are linked to specific types of well-being."Some types of apps are more closely related to high well-being outcomes than others,” say Gallup researchers Dan Witters and Sanjeeta Agrawal. "While use of running map apps and apps for healthy restaurant menu options are mutually highly linked to both social and physical well-being, other apps are more uniquely aligned. Apps for water intake and healthy recipes are strongly linked to social well-being benefits, while running maps and personal training apps are strongly associated with physical well-being."  Read More

Does social media boost healthcare careers?
Nov,03,2014
by: Zack Budryk
Many nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) believe social media use has helped their careers, according to a new survey by The Clinical Advisor.
Just under half of respondents (45 percent) said they used social media in a career context, while more than two-thirds (68 percent) reported using it for personal matters. Of those who used it for business, 28 percent told the publication they feel it helps NPs' and PAs' careers, with no respondents thinking it harmed their careers, while 12 percent said it didn't actively help and 13 percent didn't know. Breaking responses down by specific social networks, LinkedIn was the most commonly used for strictly business purposes (48 percent). It was followed by Google Plus, which 36 percent of respondents used specifically for business purposes, and Facebook, with 26 percent.  Read More

Conference Highlights Progress on Different Fronts in Connected Health Technology
Nov,03,2014
by: Andy Oram
Technology is not the focus of the Connected Health Symposium, but technical advances play a major role there because of the potential for digital technology to help health care meet its broad goals of listening to patients and coordinating care among these patients, their family members and the professional team.In some ways, the technology is far more advanced than the health care providers who could benefit from it, and it is up to those health care institutions to evolve organizationally and culturally. But on the other hand, much technology looks good only on the surface and quickly comes to shame when connected to real-life workflows and patient needs.   Read More

Health insurance upstart Oscar competes on telehealth, user experience
Nov,05,2014
by: Jonah Comstock
In May, Oscar, the New York-based individual-only insurance plan raised $80 million at close to a $1 billion valuation. That brought the company’s total funding to $150 million. It’s an impressive feat for a small startup attempting to compete in health insurance, which is so thoroughly dominated by huge legacy players. At IBF’s Digital Healthcare Innovation Summit in Boston, Oscar co-founder Kevin Nazemi spoke with Bessemer Venture Partner’s Steve Kraus about how a focus on user experience — and a fortuitous market opportunity in the Affordable Care Act — helped catapult Oscar into the national spotlight. He also announced for the first time that the company will be expanding from just New York into New Jersey.  Read More

The Next Big Step In Mobile E-commerce
Oct,27,2014
by: Peder Aadahl
I was right!
A year ago, I explained how the launch of the fingerprint security on the iPhone 5s was a good sign for mobile e-commerce. I hinted brands should take advantage of this mobile payment option for their products. In Apple’s fall announcement, this became reality. The new Apple Pay is something that will change the mobile e-commerce industry dramatically. Already, big brands like Target are jumping on board so that users can purchase their products seamlessly within the Target App with the press of their thumb.  Read More

Major banks prep their own mobile payment apps

Oct,29,2014by: Martyn Williams
Several major national and international banks are planning to launch their own mobile payments apps next year. The banks would be major competitors to handset makers Apple and Google because unlike others pushing mobile wallet technology, such as mobile phone carriers and retailers, they already have an intimate relationship with consumers and know their spending habits. "Banks all around the world are working on this right now," said James Anderson, senior vice president for mobile and emerging payments at MasterCard. How workplace technology can transform the small business
Oct,27,2014
by: Krishan Sharma
After eight failed startups, 27-year-old Nic Blair turned things around with two successful businesses — Search Factory and Brus Media.  Search Factory started out from his parents' house, and, in just three years, the company has grown to 27 full-time staff members who operate from two offices in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, with an annual turnover of more than AU$2 million. Two years ago, Blair took the learnings from Search Factory and founded his second successful venture, Brus Media — a mobile advertising network focused on the growth and monetisation of mobile apps through cost-per-install advertising.  Read More

From Sprint to Microsoft: The 5 biggest job cutters in wireless in 2014
Oct,09,2014
by: Phil Goldstein
Last week the U.S. economy marked a major milestone: The official unemployment rate dipped to 5.9 percent, the first time it has been below 6 percent since the summer of 2008. Indeed, some companies in the wireless industry that shed thousands of jobs in recent years are now on the mend. For example, BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) CEO John Chen said earlier this summer the company has finished its three-year-long restructuring efforts as it seeks to refocus on the enterprise market, and would begin targeted hiring. Additionally, Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) has seen its finances recover after announcing more than 15,000 job cuts in the past three years. Read More

iPad: Art object or enterprise tablet?
Oct,15,2014
by: Jason Perlow
Yesterday, I talked a bit about my yearly ritual of trading in my iPad for the latest and greatest model, and why as IT professionals it may make sense to think about our device purchases as leased equipment that depreciates heavily and is turned in for the newest technology, rather than holding onto it indefinitely, as a consumer might. The iPad is, at the end of the day, a consumer device. But you would have to be completely unaware of the increasingly common use cases in which scores of CxOs and other executives and IT pros are bringing them into the workplace for use with all kinds of productivity workloads now, whether they are BYOD outright or are actual corporate assets.  Read More

Microsoft keeps Windows 10 promotion to a minimum for consumers

Oct,13,2014
by: Gregg Keizer
Microsoft's Sept. 30 rollout of Windows 10 was focused on enterprise customers because the company doesn't want consumers to hold off on holiday purchases of computers, said Michael Silver of Gartner. Computers with the new operating system won't ship until mid-2015. "Early in 2015 we'll introduce the consumer chapter and talk much more about other device types and more consumer features," Windows chief Terry Myerson wrote in a blog post Sept. 30.  Read More

How reputation affects success (and 5 ways to improve it)

Oct,07,2014
by:Daniel Burstein
For an ecommerce transaction, trust is essential. While ecommerce has grown significantly, it still requires more confidence for a customer to purchase from an online retailer (where the value of the product and reliability of the store is conceptual) than a brick-and-mortar retailer (where customers can touch and feel a product and take it home instantly). We wanted to test this theory and see how reputation affects overall ecommerce success. Oct,06,2014

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have said it before: Social works, and as a result, they’re increasing marketing spending and time invested in the tactic. Based on a July 2014 study by BIA/Kelsey, Facebook is benefitting from both.

Despite impressive usage for platforms such as LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter’s Promoted Tweets, Facebook ruled the social space, with 55.1% of SMBs saying they had a page on the social network specifically for their business.  Read More

Oct,06,2014
by: Darrell Etherington
Google’s Scott Jenson, an interaction and UX designer who left the company only to return to the Chrome team last November, has revealed a project underway at the company called The Physical Web to provide “interaction on demand” so that people can walk up and use any smart devices without the need for intervening mobile apps. This would make it possible for users to simply walk up to a bus stop and receive the time until the next arriving bus, without any additional software needed. Read More

Nokia to bring HERE mapping platform to Android via partnership with Samsung
Aug,29,2014
by: Phil Goldstein
Nokia (NYSE:NOK) said it will bring its HERE mapping platform to devices that run Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android software starting with Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphones. The deal represents a major win for Nokia since the company sold its devices business to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) in April.
According to Nokia, thanks to a licensing deal with Samsung, a HERE beta for Android will be made available for free in October when Samsung rolls out its Gear S smart watch, which runs on the Tizen platform but also supports HERE. That should strengthen the link between the wearable device and Samsung's smartphones, which can be paired together via Bluetooth. Read more

Microsoft finally cracks down on deceptive Windows Store 'crap apps'
Aug,28,2014
by: Mark Hachman
So-called deceptive “crap apps” have always plagued the Windows Store. But now, Microsoft appears to be finally ready to do something about them.
In a blog post late Wednesday, Microsoft said that it had removed 1,500 deceptively named apps as part of a policy shift to crack down on developers “trying to game the system with misleading titles or descriptions,” the company said.
A year ago, Microsoft publicly said that the Windows Store has more than 100,000 apps, and it’s unlikely that that number has climbed higher than 200,000 apps by now. But as far back as Oct. 2012—before Windows 8 even launched—analysts were pointing out that the fate of the Windows 8 app store didn’t need a large number of apps to be successful. It needed quality, and that’s not what Microsoft delivered. Instead, consumers are faced with numerous clone apps and paid “alternatives” to freeware, both outcomes that give those users a bad taste in their mouths.  Read More

Apple Updates Mobile App Ad-serving Guidelines

Sept,01,2014
by: Tim Maytom

Apple has released new, stricter guidelines for developers submitting apps to the iTunes store designed to serve ads.
Under the new rules, Apple will reject mobile apps that don’t use Advertising Identifiers, specifically the IDFA, a unique ID for each iOS device that is the only way to offer targetd ads across the network. Apps may also be rejected if they use the IDFA but do not display ads properly or have a built-in advertising, or indicate they don’t use the IDFA when they do.
With more and more developers using deep linking to help people discover relevant content within their apps, identifying content-related ads in apps has become increasingly important. Apple has expanded its iAd advertising network into 16 countries and regions, moving into Russia and Switzerland most recently.  Read More
