NPD: 66% of U.S. mobile broadband connections by end of 2015 will be tablets

Tablets are expected to make up a large majority of all mobile broadband connections in the U.S. over the next two years, according to a new report from the NPD Group.
By the end of 2015, NPD analysts expect the number of active mobile broadband devices to reach 34 million, a nearly 50 percent increase from 2013, according to a new report from NPD's Connected Intelligence group. The NPD report predicted that two-thirds (66 percent) of those devices will be tablets.

Japanese retailer and e-commerce company Rakuten, which owns Kobo e-readers and online retailer Play.com, is acquiring Viber Media and its popular Viber over-the-top messaging service for $900 million.In a statement, Rakuten said that it "aims to be the global No. 1 Internet services company, and in addition to our existing e-Commerce and Internet finance services, this acquisition will allow the company to build on several digital contents services, and advance into new markets."

Sixty-three percent of U.S. mobile subscribers use their phone to go online, up from 55 percent a year ago and surging from 31 percent in 2009, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. "Because 91 percent of all Americans now own a cell phone, this means that 57 percent of all American adults are cell Internet users," Pew Research Center said

Samsung Electronics, which opened a new startup accelerator in New York City this week, has a key goal in mind for the new center: incubate promising startups and then acquire them to incorporate their innovations into Samsung's devices. "The future for us is about the thoughtful integration of hardware and software," David Eun, the head of Samsung's Open Innovation Center, told The Verge. "And that means startups." As CNET noted, the company hosted an event for reporters, startups and other partners in its new office in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.

Apple is offering up the "last compatible version" of apps to iPhone, iPod and iPad users still rocking older iOS releases. A Reddit user pointed it out after trying to install Instagram on a second-generation iPod Touch and posted a screenshot of the prompt.

Featured Report: Consumers won't pay for useless apps

Consumers may be downloading apps in mass quantities, but that doesn't mean they aren't concerned about quality, according to a recent report from Strategy Analytics. The company's latest Wireless Media Lab research study showed stability, ease of use and overall usefulness were among the key ingredients for demonstrating value to consumers of mobile apps. More than 80 percent of respondents said they also want highly useful apps to come free of charge. Less than 10 percent pay for mobile apps, said Taryn Tulay, an analyst with Strategy Analytics

But while the jury in Apple's court case against Samsung said Samsung had willfully infringed in most cases, Apple has apparently focused its attention on devices that are mostly unavailable in the US already
