Reality Check: The rise of mobile-first enterprises and the impact on devops

July,01,2014
by:  Don Addington
Agile and development and operations methodologies have made sweeping cultural changes in enterprise IT. Many of these changes have had technological enablers – virtualized servers, server-based app deployments (think HTML and CSS), and unit test frameworks – that made continuous testing and continuous deployment truly possible. It’s hard to determine whether culture changed the technology or if technology change the culture. Either way, we are getting good at it. Take, for example, Amazon.com’s frequently quoted deployment stats: 11.6 seconds between deployments; more than 1,000 deployments in a single hour; and as many as 30,000 hosts receiving a deployment simultaneously. The numbers are staggering. Read More

Mobile apps now account for more than half of all digital media time
June,27,2014
Mike Dano
"May turned out to be a banner month for mobile," research firm comScore noted, pointing to its new research showing that mobile platforms--smartphones and tablets--combined to account for 60 percent of "total digital media time spent," up from 50 percent a year ago. The firm also said that mobile apps accounted for more than half of all digital media time spent in May at 51 percent.
The firm noted that this shift to mobile is affecting different content categories differently. For example, full 96 percent of all digital radio is consumed through a mobile device, while just 4 percent is consumed on a desktop computer. On the other hand, social networking is slightly more evenly split, with 71 percent of users accessing it through mobile and 29 percent access it through a desktop computer.   Read More

The enterprise may be ready for Internet of Things, but networks are not
June,30,2014
by: Charlie Osborne
Enterprises are ready to profit from the Internet of Things (IoT), but security concerns and network capacity worries are holding back deployment.
According to a recent survey commissioned by network control company Infoblox, the majority of IT professionals believe that IoT is a potentially lucrative market, but there may not be enough network capacity to handle the demand that will accompany an anticipated explosion in the number of connected devices.
The research, carried out in May, was conducted online and collected 400 responses from US and UK network managers and executives involved in building, running, and managing enterprise networks at firms with over 1,000 employees. The majority of respondents — 90 percent — are either planning or already implementing solutions to cope with the increased demands on networking caused by IoT projects.  Read More

Featured Report: AT&T snags OnStar deal from Verizon Wireless

RCR Wireless
Feb,25, 2013

by:+ Dan Meyer
AT&T seems to have usurped Verizon Wireless as General Motors carrier of choice for the auto makers OnStar telematics offering. AT&T reported today that is has signed a multi-year agreement to provide an “enhanced suite of safety, security, diagnostic and infotainment services” to OnStar deployments in GM’s range of car brands using the carrier’s LTE network. The agreement is set to begin in 2014 and will cover the United States and Canada. The Canadian network provider for the offering was not released. AT&T said the offering will include voice calling, streaming audio, Web access, applications and video for backseat passengers as well as powering GM’s planned in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot offering. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The timing of the deal seems to provide AT&T with enough time to fully deploy its LTE services across its current cellular footprint, which it expects to reach 300 million potential customer covered by mid-2014.

Clearwire takes $80M from Sprint Nextel, remains aloof on tie up

Feb,27,2013
by:+Dan Meyer.
Clearwire’s future continued on its un-clear path as the wireless broadband company announced plans to dip into an $80 million “draw” provided by Sprint Nextel as part of its ongoing attempt to acquire Clearwire, though Clearwire’s management reiterated that it has still not decided to move forward with that deal. The draw, which was originally as much as $800 million, was offered as part of Sprint Nextel’s accepted $2.2 billion acquisition attempt of Clearwire late last year. The offer is in the form of exchangeable notes for Clearwire common stock at $1.50 per share and is set to be drawn on March 1. Clearwire did not draw on offers that were presented for January and February.

Wireless Connections Creep Into Everyday Things

Feb,27,2013
by:+Peter Svensson,
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A car that tells your insurance company how you're driving. A bathroom scale that lets you chart your weight on the Web. And a meter that warns your air conditioner when electricity gets more expensive.

Welcome to the next phase of the wireless revolution.
The first wave of wireless was all about getting people to talk to each other on cellphones. The second will be getting things to talk to each other, with no humans in between. So-called machine-to-machine communication is getting a lot of buzz at this year's wireless trade show. Some experts believe these connections will outgrow the traditional phone business in less than a decade.

Samsung exec disputes notion of tension with Google over Android

Feb,26, 2013
by:+Phil Goldstein
BARCELONA, Spain--A Samsung Electronics executive pushed back against the idea that Samsung's dominant position in Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android ecosystem is a source of tension between the two companies. Nick DiCarlo, vice president of portfolio planning and product marketing at Samsung's U.S. mobile arm, said Samsung's Android sales have been "positive" for Android. His comments come after the Wall Street Journal reported that there is increasing tension between Google and Samsung, by far the largest Android OEM. The report, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, said Google executives are concerned that Samsung has become so big and could pressure Google to alter the nature of their relationship

Small Business Healthcare Consortium
Hello Businesses Owner,

I am writing to you because our changing health care system will have a profound effect on all of us. Now that the election is over and the Supreme Court has ruled, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is not going away. It will not be repealed and it is up to us to make sure it will work for small businesses and individuals as it was intended to do.

That’s why I joined the Campaign for Better Health Care’s newly created Small Business Health Care Consortium (SBHCC). This consortium views the needs of small businesses and their employees as a top priority.

And, as a member of the Steering Committee of the SBHCC I am personally inviting you to join our network of small businesses who know that only through our collective voices that will assure that the Affordable Care Act live up to its goal of making healthcare affordable for all.

Discussions around health reform have been confusing and, sometimes, even misleading. It is the goal of the SBHCC to provide factual information about the changes that are already happening and those coming in the near future. The SBHCC discusses the benefits and opportunities of the ACA and what Illinois small businesses need to do to make sure this law will benefit them.

Many key components of the ACA are national in nature. For instance, small businesses currently providing health insurance to their employees could be eligible for a 35% tax credit. And, while employers with fewer than 50 full time employees are not required to provide health insurance, their employees can take advantage of the ACA’s benefits.

Other components will be implemented at the State level and these decisions will either enhance small businesses or provide another hurdle. One important component is that all states must implement a health insurance exchange (marketplace). These exchanges will include a rate review process with defined, easy to understand plans to consider and review side-by-side.

As small business owners we share many of the same, serious business challenges. It is my hope that you and your small business peers do want to learn more about the ACA. Let’s take this opportunity to act collectively to get control of health insurance costs and improve access to coverage. The opportunity to create positive change is now. It is about fairness and choices for small businesses. To that end I like for you to hear my own personal story about how the new healthcare law will effect me.

Seminar: Understanding EHR Networks

Seminar: Understanding EHR Networks

With Meaningful Use 1 and 2 now part of the healthcare IT landscape. Private healthcare providers must now create EHR systems or face sever penalties by 2015. But many private doctors and small clinics while knowing that they have to create an EHR have not started because they have so many questions about how to create and EHR. But not many answers from government or Healthcare IT providers that could help them create their EHR systems like larger healthcare providers who have larger IT budgets and staff.

This fact has forced many small healthcare providers to partner with larger hospitals to help them create their EHR network. The latest reports states that over 60% of small healthcare providers have partner with larger hospitals to help them create their EHR network Still many small providers are going on their own to create their EHR networks. For these providers they must ask themselves several questions to to truly understand how to create and EHR system that will meet all of the Meaningful Use 1 and 2 requirements these questions are:

1.Have you started your EHR network?
2.Do you know if your are eligible for the EHR Incentive Program through Medicare and Medicaid?
3.Do you have any type of medical software in place i.e. scheduling, lab reports, billing, etc. In your practice?
4.Are you aware of the Meaningful use1 and 2 time limits and penalties for not having an EHR plan in place?
5.Can your practice survive a medical IT audit?
6.Are You waiting to start your EHR network because of changes in the Healthcare Policies?

8.Are you unsure of the cost of an E H R network?
9.Are you confused about how to pick the right IT vendor that can help you build your E H R Network?

Q&A: Health orgs don't protect patient data for reasons going 'back to the industrial revolution'
Government Health IT

Dec,06,2012
by: Tom Sullivan
Three out of five healthcare organizations are not allocating enough resources to protect patient data – and among the reasons is a simple fact that the industry has no way to place a value on that information. That’s according to Rick Kam, president and co-founder of ID Experts, which sponsored the Ponemon Institute’s third annual benchmark "Study on Patient Privacy and Data Security," published on Dec.6. Prior to the report’s release, Government Health IT Editor Tom Sullivan spoke with Kam and Ponemon Institute Chairman Larry Ponemon about the survey's alarming statistics, the potential dangers of criminal social-engineering and why healthcare as an industry is so far behind in terms of safeguarding data.

HIMSS: Hospitals spending more to ensure data privacy, security

Dec,13, 2012

Privacy and security budgets at most healthcare organizations have increased during the past year, according to responses to HIMSS' fifth annual security survey, unveiled this week. More than half (56 percent) of the 303 health IT and security professionals queried said that their organization has increased the amount of IT budget allocated for information security, although 47 percent of respondents said that their organization spends 3 percent or less of the overall IT budget on such measures. Still, more than three-fourths of respondents said that their organization conducted formal risk analyses to examine risks to patient data. Of those, nearly two-thirds (64 percent) did so on an a year-to-year basis. Additionally, 64 percent of overall respondents said that their organization conducted an audit of the IT security plan, with 65 percent of those respondents doing so annually.

HHS Puts Out Three Health Care Reform Rules

Nov,20,2012
by: Joseph Goedert
The Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services on Nov. 20 issued three proposed rules implementing major provisions of the Affordable Care Act that regulate insurers and bring new rights to consumers. The first rule proposes health insurance market reforms, including prohibiting denial of coverage because of a pre-existing condition or other factors. Insurance issuers could vary premiums--within specific limits--based only on age, tobacco use, family size and geography. Banned are other factors besides pre-existing conditions such as health status, claims history, duration of coverage, gender, occupation and small employer size and industry. States can enact stronger protections than the minimum standards under the federal rating rules.

Fiscal, demographic realities make mHealth key to reducing care costs

Nov,19, 2012
by: Greg Slabodkin
While the presidential election season is over (thankfully), the issue of healthcare reform is not going away and remains a critical challenge for our nation. This year, U.S. healthcare expenditures will total a staggering $2.8 trillion--the equivalent of the world's fifth largest economy--and are estimated to reach $3.5 trillion by 2016. Cutting healthcare costs is imperative if America is to get a handle on its tremendous debt and out-of-control healthcare spending which currently stands at 17.9 percent of gross domestic product. Unless significant reforms are put in place, we will continue to see spiraling healthcare costs.
