23% of providers use Epic, but VA EHR is tops for satisfaction
July,17,2014
by:Jennifer Bresnick
Nearly a quarter of physician providers with an EHR are currently using Epic Systems, according to data from the 2014 Medscape EHR Report, but the wildly popular interface doesn’t get anywhere near the highest marks for user satisfaction.  That honor goes to the VA-CPRS, the EHR used by the beleaguered Department of Veterans Affairs, with Epic left languishing in seventh place behind several of its most significant competitors. Employers On Private Exchanges Troubled By Employee Communication Challenges
July,18,2014by: ANDREA DAVIS
Early adopters of private health care exchanges shared their experiences this week at EBN’s Private Healthcare Exchanges conference in Chicago, with many reporting employee communication as one of their primary challenges in moving to the exchange model.
Leslie Vander Gheynst, director of KWRI human resources with realtor Keller Williams, which has 100,000 real estate agents across the U.S., says communication and education was “extremely difficult because those agents are not focused on how the health care reform bill is going to affect them.” Keller Williams replaced its mini-medical plans last December and now offers its sales associates (classified as independent contractors, or 1099 workers, for IRS tax-filing purposes) access to a private exchange through ConnectedHealth. Intel, Samsung and others forge open-source Internet of Things connectivity group

July,08,2014
by: Phil Goldstein
Intel, Samsung Electronics, Broadcom and other wireless and technology players joined forces to create a new group aimed at coming up with an open-source standard to connect devices to each other across operating systems and wireless protocols as part of the Internet of Things.
The new group, the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), will serve a similar purpose to the AllSeen Alliance, which uses an open-source implementation of Qualcomm's (NASDAQ:QCOM) AllJoyn framework to connect devices to one another regardless of their underlying proprietary technology or communications protocols. AllSeen has been mostly focused on the connected home, while the OIC wants to broaden its scope to include the automotive and workplace settings.   Read More

Report: Sprint Vetting Plans That Undercut AT&T, Verizon

July,08,2014
by: Ben Munson
Sprint is testing out family data plans that undercut similar offerings from AT&T and Verizon, according to CNET. The trials—reportedly running San Diego, Portland, Ore. and Las Vegas—are charging per device and offering data buckets ranging from 1 GB to 60 GB. Sprint’s 1 GB plan is $20, only $5 less than similar plans at AT&T and Verizon. But Sprint’s 10 GB plan is $40 less and its 30 GB plan is $95 less than the same deals at AT&T and Verizon. Under Sprint’s test plans, customers can get 60 GB for $225, the same price AT&T and Verizon charge for 30 GB.  Read More

In-app purchase fraud: It may be worse than developers think

July,08,2014
by: Shane Schick
There's only one thing better than gaining hundreds or even thousands of users for an app or mobile game, and that's when they start spending money inside the app. Unless, of course, the spending isn't what it seems.  As developers have shifted away from a monetization model based on paid downloads to "freemium" or free to play (F2P) approaches, many of them are looking at in-app purchasing (IAP) as a better way to create a revenue stream for their work. However, there's one major concern that could drag on both big and small app vendors: in-app fraud. Read More

Report: Microsoft Working on Wearable Technology

July,03,2014
by: Ryan Martin
Microsoft could be the latest giant of tech to jump into the burgeoning wearable technology market, as circulating reports say Redmond is working on a fitness tracker/smart watch to be released later this year. According to CNET, Microsoft has been developing a wearable device for some time, but it now appears ready to move beyond the R&D phase. Sources close to Microsoft say the company is modeling the design and pricing of its device on Samsung’s $199 Gear Fit, which launched earlier this year as part of a full lineup of Samsung devices. It’s believed that the wrist device will not only track activity such as steps, exercise and sleep, but also feature some of the capabilities of a smart watch such as displaying the time, text messages and emails. With a late 2014 launch Microsoft could be once again going directly up against old rival Apple as it’s expected to also release the hotly anticipated iWatch in the coming months. Read More

Several years ago, when smartphones were beginning to gain popularity, major carriers like AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless and Sprint were actively promoting unlimited data plans to entice business and consumer customers. These days however, they've changed their tune. Lowell McAdam, the CEO of Verizon Communicatons, sees the unlimited data plan as unsustainable under rising customer demand; saying: "Eventually, unlimited has to go away."

Featured Report: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile detail holiday marketing strategies

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile detail holiday marketing strategies

Fierce Wireless
Nov,22,2013
by:Staff

The fourth quarter holiday shopping season is the most critical sales period for the nation's top wireless carriers. The fourth quarter is typically when they spend the most on advertising, and it's usually when they add the most subscribers.
According to historical data from research firm Nielsen, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) have consistently spent more on marketing in the fourth quarter than Sprint (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS), which makes sense, given the disparities between the sizes of the companies' subscriber bases and revenues. In the fourth quarter of 2012, Verizon spent $476 million on marketing, according to Nielsen (though that figure includes money for Verizon's wireline operations as well). AT&T Mobility spent $364.3 million, Sprint spent $222.2 million and T-Mobile spent $234.7 million.

Smartwatches aren't the next big thing. The next big thing is already here

by:Steve Ranger

Small screens, tiny batteries, a general air of nerdiness and no particular reason to exist: it's never been easy selling smartwatches and it's not going to get any easier anytime soon.
Samsung was first off the blocks this time around with the release of the Galaxy Gear, and has apparently shipped 800,000 of the smartwatch (although it's unclear how many it has sold). But despite plenty of rumours that they're working on rival timepieces, few of the other big players (Google, Apple, or Microsoft in particular) seem especially keen to join the smartwatch race, leaving it to startups, Kickstarter-powered projects and fitness bands to make most of the running.

This past week, many in the telecommunications community began to take T-Mobile US seriously. For the second quarter in a row, the Bellevue-based wireless carrier posted net additions of over one million subscribers. They did this with minimal machine-to-machine net additions, and with only a few thousand tablets. And in the process, they outpaced the rest of the wireless industry in (smart)phone net additions.
