Feedback continues to pour in from health IT groups and leaders in the wake of this week's election results. Speaking at Wednesday's Health IT Policy Committee meeting, National Coordinator for Health IT Farzad Mostashari said the reelection of President Obama, in conjunction with the relative status quo nature of the House and Senate election results, gives the nation "the chance to continue to make strides, continue the essential thrust of the policies and approaches" pertaining to health IT, Government Health IT reports. "It also affirms our responsibility to do the peoples' work, to come together, Republicans and Democrats, to do the peoples' work," Mostashari said. "Progress has always been through fits and starts. It has not always been a straight line, a smooth path."

How Will Election Affect HITECH?

The re-election of President Obama makes it a safe bet that healthcare reform, as well as the HITECH Act's electronic health record incentive program, will proceed as planned. In the weeks leading up to election, eight GOP legislators raised questions about the EHR incentive program, expressing concerns ranging from whether the program lacked tough standards for "meaningful" interoperability and data exchange to whether EHRs enable billing fraud. Four Republican Congressmen even called for a temporary halt of the HITECH Act EHR incentive program

Three sure bets: What Obama’s re-election means for pharma manufacturers

Now that the presidential election is over, we can better predict the administration’s policies for the next four years. Right now, a few things are certain:

  • The sun will still rise in the east and set in the west.
  • We will still have to file our taxes.
  • Changes for life sciences manufacturers are still going to occur.

The reelection of President Obama has maintained the status quo with regard to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). That is, the uncertainty about the potential overturning of the act has been taken out of the equation. The PPACA is here to stay. What remains to be seen, however, is how much change manufacturers can expect to occur. Three questions come to mind
