Facebook and Twitter continue to be the dominant social networks for small businesses interested in building their marketing presence via social media, according to a new survey by Vertical Response. Fully 90 percent of the 462 small-business owners surveyed by the marketing services company said they are active on Facebook, while 70 percent are using Twitter. That compares with just 32 percent for Google+ and 29 percent for Pinterest, according to the survey. The other theme that sounds loud and clear is one that I mentioned a few weeks ago in another post about this subject: Many small-business owners are struggling with the time commitment and investment that social media takes; they are balancing it against the payback.

Mobile, Social Get Holiday Boost

Retailers expect 6% of sales to come from mobile The online holiday shopping season is officially under way, and internet retailers are expecting the dollars to roll in on digital channels. September research from Chase Paymentech found that US retailers with a web presence expected just over half of their holiday sales to come from ecommerce. They said an additional 6% would come from mcommerce.

Mobile Ads Are the Future. They're Also Lousy

Companies across the Internet continually proclaim mobile ads as the next great frontier. Pandora Media (P), Twitter, and other big names often derive the majority of their revenue from them. On Oct. 23, Facebook’s (FB) stock leapt more than 10 percent on news that the social network earned 14 percent of its third-quarter revenue from mobile ads, up from almost nothing in the first quarter. That mobile advertising should be an enormous business makes sense. After all, our smartphones are always with us, know where we are, and collect far more data about us than a desktop PC. So if mobile has such potential, why are the ads so mediocre?
