Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) major push to grab market share for its Windows Phone 8 platform is getting under way this week, with support coming from AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T), Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), and T-Mobile USA in the United States. Meanwhile, Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) said it will hold a launch event Jan. 30 to officially unveil its BlackBerry 10 platform, which is currently in testing with more than 50 carriers worldwide. The timing puts the platforms on a collision course as Microsoft and RIM try to win the hearts of carriers and consumers by becoming the "third ecosystem" behind Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone.

Android app install links added to Google+ social network timelines

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is leveraging its social networking reach to drive downloads of Android mobile applications, introducing install links within Google+ user timelines. The Next Web reports that Google+ users can now share Android apps and games recommendations to their social networking contacts by pasting Google Play storefront URLs directly into their feed. Google+ automatically embeds an Install button--clicking the button generates the app's Google Play page as well as a prompt asking the user to confirm installation and identify which of his Android devices should download the app.

Apple, HTC Dismiss Lawsuits to End Patent Dispute

After a long series of lawsuits against one another, Apple and HTC have finally come to a truce. The two manufacturers agreed to dismiss the lawsuits they’ve waged against each other in the past two years, starting with Apple’s claim that HTC copied the iPhone. The New York Times is reporting that the settlement includes a 10-year license agreement that grants rights to both current and future patents held by Apple and HTC. However, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, though many believe that HTC is paying Apple. This deal is the first settlement between Android device makers and Apple, though there are still larger patent lawsuits around the world between Apple and other Android device makers.

Nokia Unveils Cross-Platform Maps Product

In what could be taken as a shot across Apple's bow, Nokia on Tuesday took the wraps off a dramatic rebranding and rethinking of its mapping product. The new cross-platform, cloud-based offering is called 'HERE' and could appeal to those iOS users looking for an alternative to iOS 6's much-maligned Apple Maps application. Nokia said it aims to "inspire a new generation of location services and devices," with its new offering, which can be accessed by browser from almost any smarpthone, tablet or PC.
