Featured Report: 9 Things Apple Could Do with $137B

Apple Inc. has recently come under attack for its practice of stockpiling cash. At the end of last year, the company was sitting on $137 billion —and the heap keeps growing. Corporations normally don't hoard cash the way Apple does. They keep enough around for immediate needs, and either invest the rest in their operations or dole it out to shareholders in the form of dividends or stock buybacks. If they need more cash for, say, an acquisition, they borrow it. Apple has never explained why it is salting away so much money —other than to say the company is preserving its options. The money belongs to shareholders, so Apple is limited in what it can legally do with it. Leaving legality aside, here are some things Apple could do with $137 billion:

Gartner: Samsung's sales dominance overshadowing Android brand

Feb,13,2013
by:+Jason Ankeny
Samsung Electronics dominated both worldwide smartphone sales and overall mobile phone sales in 2012, and research firm Gartner contends the manufacturer's brand is now eclipsing Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android brand in the minds of consumers. Gartner reports that Samsung sold 64.5 million smartphones during the fourth quarter, up 85.3 percent over the final three months of 2011. The vendor sold 384.6 million phones last year, with smartphones accounting for 53.5 percent of that total, compared to 28 percent a year earlier. Samsung ended 2012 controlling 22 percent of worldwide mobile phone sales, ahead of Nokia (NYSE:NOK) at 19.1 percent and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) at 7.5 percent. Samsung's closest Android rival, ZTE, follows at 3.9 percent.

Report: Global Mobile Phone Sales Declined 1.7 Percent in 2012

Feb,13,2013
by:+Ben Munson
Global mobile phone sales totaled 1.75 billion units in 2012, marking a 1.7 percent decrease to the amount of handsets snatched up by end-users in 2011. According to a new study by Gartner, smartphones rang up the most sales, with 207.7 million units moving in the fourth quarter of 2012, good enough for a 38.3 percent increase annually. Still, Gartner asserts that total sales were down for the first time since 2009. “Tough economic conditions, shifting consumer preferences and intense market competition weakened the worldwide mobile phone market this year,” said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. Although feature phones still beat out smartphones with 264.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012, the demand for dumbphones dropped 19.3 annually. Gartner predicts global mobile phone sales to move 1.9 billion units in 2013, with smartphone accounting for one billion of that total.

Why running Android apps on the Surface Pro is bad for Microsoft, Android, and developers

Feb,12, 2013
by:+Adrian Kingsley-Hughes
Microsoft just got 750,000 new apps for its Surface Pro tablet without having to lift a finger. This is thanks to BlueStacks releasing an optimized version of its Android App Player for Microsoft's newest tablet. Problem is, plastering over the gaps in Microsoft's app ecosystem by installing an Android emulator is not going to solve anything — and it could make things a lot worse. One of the biggest challenges of releasing a new class of device is setting up an ecosystem of apps to support it. Do it right — as Apple did with iOS, or Google did with Android — and it can be a solid foundation for massive sales.
