Millions of students in the U.S. don’t have access to high speed Internet services at home and it’s hurting their chances for academic success, but fixing the problem is not going to be easy or cheap. As the parents of teen and a tween, one of the most common refrains my wife and I hear around our house from the kids is “I need the laptop to do homework.” Whether they’re researching a topic for a report or presentation, checking homework assignments online or downloading the latest Justin Bieber album for extra credit (I’m skeptical about that last claim of theirs), the computer and, more importantly, the Internet seem to be a requirement for them to do well in school. It’s hard to fathom how they would function well academically without broadband access at home.

BlackBerry's Q10 smartphone may not hit U.S. until May or June

BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) CEO Thorsten Heins said that the U.S. launch of the company's new Q10 smartphone, which sports a physical keyboard, may not come until eight to 10 weeks after the U.S. launch of the company's touchscreen Z10, which is expected by mid-March. Last week Heins had indicated that the Q10 would hit U.S. carriers in April, but now that timeline appears to have been pushed back. Eight to 10 weeks after a mid-March Z10 launch would put the U.S. date for the Q10 launch in mid-May to early June. "We're trying to get it as close as we can," Heins said in an interview with the AP

Report: Mobile Data Traffic to Increase 13-Fold by 2017

Global mobile data traffic is expected to increase 13-fold by 2017, reaching 11.2 exabytes per month, according to Cisco's Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast. The company says the growth in mobile data usage will be driven by the increase in mobile Internet connection, including M2M modules. Cisco cites estimates from the United Nations that predict 7.6 billion mobile Internet connections by 2017.

Hackers release Evasi0n jailbreak for Apple's iOS 6, downloads crash server

The hacker collective called Evad3rs has released its long-awaited Evasi0n jailbreak for devices running Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS 6 or 6.1, enabling consumers to liberate their iPhones and iPads from the strict guidelines governing the iOS ecosystem. Jailbreaking is a legal but warranty-voiding process that allows consumers to run unauthorized code, adding software, features and user interface tweaks not supported by the original manufacturer. Released via Evasi0nJailbreak.com and optimized for OS X, Windows and Linux, Evasi0n creates an untethered jailbreak, meaning users are not required to reconnect their device to the desktop to restart it.
