What Percentage of Physicians Were Using Computerized Capabilities To Meet Selected Meaningful Use Core Objectives in 2009 and 2012?

Eighty percent of physicians used computerized provide order entry systems in 2012, up from 45% in 2009, according to a report from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.
The report also found that physicians with electronic prescribing capabilities increased from 33% in 2009 to 73% in 2012, while the percentage of doctors using drug interaction checks increased from 35% in 2009 to 67% in 2012.
Meanwhile, 66% of physicians maintained problem lists in 2012, up from 38% in 2009. In addition, the use of clinical decision support among physicians grew from 30% in 2009 to 50% in 2012.

Security Benchmarks for Medical Devices

A new initiative is working toward developing security control benchmarks, or best practices, for Internet-enabled medical devices. The first voluntary guidelines, designed for infusion pumps, are targeted for release by year's end, says Will Pelgrin, president and CEO of the Center for Internet Security, which is spearheading the effort.
CIS is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the cybersecurity readiness and response of public and private-sector entities. Through its security benchmarks division, it has already produced voluntary guidance in other areas, such as passwords.

EHR Incentive Program
Healthcare Professionals Did You Know? Non-hospital-based physicians and other eligible professionals can obtain incentive payments of as much as $44,000 under Medicare or $63,750 under Medicaid. Under both Medicare and Medicaid, eligible hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementing and meaningfully using certified EHR technology.


About two-thirds (65 percent) of hospitals and 32 percent of office-based physicians plan to enroll in meaningful use programs by the end of 2012 in order to receive the maximum incentives, according to survey results announced Thursday morning. Fewer federal dollars will be available to hospitals and doctors that wait to adopt EHR technology, and failure to meaningfully use EHRs starting in 2015 will result in Medicare penalties.
