I remember when I first looked up a patient on Google. It was my last day on the bone marrow transplant unit, back when I was an intern. As I stood before the patient, taking her history, she told me she had been a painter and suggested I look up her work on the Internet. I did, and I found her paintings fascinating. Even though our paths crossed fleetingly, she is one of the few patients I vividly remember from that time.

Telehealth lobbying group to fight barriers to tech-driven care

A new lobbying organization will seek to eliminate legal and regulatory barriers to telemedicine and other technology-driven approaches to delivering medical care. The Alliance for Connected Care includes pharmacy chains CVS Caremark Corp. and Walgreen Co., insurance firm WellPoint and medical technology companies Teladoc and HealthSpot.

Health tech matchmaking program moves beyond providers and payers to add consumer focus

It might be a bit late to look for a partner for Valentine’s Day, but not for a New York-based matchmaking program in healthcare. The commercialization program to advance innovative digital health tools is accepting applications until February 17 from health IT entrepreneurs and companies who can help each other meet a specific healthcare challenge.
PILOT Health Tech NYC, developed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Health 2.0, is expanding its matchmaking program. Groups that host the pilot can include employers, foundations and retailers. Health IT companies can include consumer-focused programs.

EHR Incentive Program
Healthcare Professionals Did You Know? Non-hospital-based physicians and other eligible professionals can obtain incentive payments of as much as $44,000 under Medicare or $63,750 under Medicaid. Under both Medicare and Medicaid, eligible hospitals may receive millions of dollars for implementing and meaningfully using certified EHR technology.


About two-thirds (65 percent) of hospitals and 32 percent of office-based physicians plan to enroll in meaningful use programs by the end of 2012 in order to receive the maximum incentives, according to survey results announced Thursday morning. Fewer federal dollars will be available to hospitals and doctors that wait to adopt EHR technology, and failure to meaningfully use EHRs starting in 2015 will result in Medicare penalties.
