Twitter is about to top a fellow titan in social networking. On Friday, BI Intelligence reported the latest findings and projections in the mobile ad revenue space. According to the research shared publicly, Twitter will take home more U.S. mobile advertising revenues this year than Facebook. That comes directly from data presented in a new forecast by eMarketer. “Twitter will earn $129.7 million in mobile advertising revenues this year in the U.S. Facebook, which rolled out mobile ads for the first time this year, will come in at just over half that amount, at $72.7 million in the U.S.,” Business Insider summarized today.

But smartphones and tablets are also being used to play games, socialize, listen to music, watch videos and read. There is even a name for the active surfing and exploring that people do during a slow period of the day: "smart boredom." Traditional and social media and enhanced user experiences all are converging in mobile devices. Yet marketers are still putting mobile in a bucket by itself, as a separate channel. Smartphones are powering commerce everywhere, but they are also creating an effect known as "showrooming." Showrooming is when shoppers visit a retail store to research a product but buy it online. Retailers despise showrooming because they are assuming all the risk by stocking products and gaining none of the benefit of the sale, which is lost to a lower-priced, online-only seller or a competitor.
