Google Wallet Seeing Double as Platform Continues to Expand

The Google Wallet app has grown faster than most had initially expected. Following the release two weeks ago of a new Google Wallet app that supports all credit and debit cards, Google said Thursday that usage has more than doubled already. “Consumers have immediately grasped the benefit of being able to use any card when shopping in-store and online,” Google says on its Commerce Blog.

Nearly 90 percent of mobile app downloads in 2012 are free

Free apps will make up 89 percent of total mobile app downloads in 2012, according to Gartner. This year we’ll see over 45.6 billion app store downloads worldwide, with freebies accounting for 40.1 billion, and paid-for downloads just 5 billion “In terms of the apps that consumers are buying, 90 percent of the paid-for downloads cost less than $3 each,” says Sandy Shen, research director at Gartner. “Similar to free apps, lower-priced apps will drive the majority of downloads. Apps between 99 cents and $2.99 will account for 87.5 percent of paid-for downloads in 2012, and 96 percent by 2016.”
