White House Gun Plan Includes Strong Roles for Medical, Mental Health Providers

The Obama Administration’s gun control proposal includes multiple provisions involving health care and mental health providers, as well as schools and health insurers. They include:
* Clarifying that no federal laws including HIPAA prohibit medical and mental health providers from reporting to police direct or credible threats of violence
* Clarifying that language in the Affordable Care Act does NOT prohibit physicians from asking patients about guns in the house and gun safety
* Finalizing regulations, expected in February 2013, requiring parity of group health coverage of mental health services

Study Finds Similar Outcomes From Online, In-Person Doctor Visits

Online physician consultations for uncomplicated conditions produce similar outcomes as in-person office visits, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, Reuters reports.
Study Details
For the study, researchers compared data on physician e-visits and in-person doctors' visits for patients with sinus infections and urinary tract infections between January 2010 and May 2011. Of the more than 8,000 consultations examined in the study, more than 90% occurred in person.

As the healthcare industry begins to adopt some of the practices of the travel and leisure sector, physician review websites are one of the clearest indications of that trend. No one really expected physicians to like being reviewed like a beauty contest on their professional demeanor, the amount of time they make patients wait, cleanliness of their offices and medical knowledge. But a new report said that of the physicians who look at their reviews, 39 percent agree with their rating and 42 percent partially agree.
