Featured Report: RIM Releases BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, Offers Free Trial

Today Research In Motion (RIM) released the first version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) 10 enterprise mobility management product, a week before it's expected to launch its brand new mobile platform, BlackBerry 10. RIM is offering organizations free, 60-day BES 10 trials for a limited time.

Before the release of BES 10, enterprises could use RIM's BlackBerry Mobile Fusion to manage BlackBerry PlayBook tablets and iOS and Android devices, but they had to use RIM's aging BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) software to manage older, pre-BlackBerry-10 smartphones. And RIM did not offer a product that enabled enterprises to manage the various infrastructure components using a single Web console.

PlayBook tablets could connect to corporate resources in the past without Mobile Fusion, thanks to support for Microsoft's ActiveSync. But Mobile Fusion, which is now part of BES 10, provide more security and management features, including its BlackBerry Balance service, which lets organizations separate corporate and personal information on BlackBerry 10 devices and PlayBook tablets so that administrators can manage that data separately.

2013 Predictions: Mobile devices overtake desktops

Jan,22,2013
by:Sven Hammar
1. A shift to a device-driven and faster Internet: By 2014, mobile Internet usage is expected to exceed desktop Internet usage. That means that in 2013 developers and marketers will be hard at work fine-tuning their mobile apps and websites to capitalize on this audience. Application testing tools will evolve to support any type of device with dynamic HTML versus device-specific code. Special protocols like WebSocket and SPDY will become mainstream.

Report: LTE subscribers to hit 198M in 2013, then skyrocket to 1B in 2016

Jan,23,2013
by:Phil Goldstein
The number of LTE subscribers worldwide is rising rapidly, and will continue to do so through the next several years, according to a new report from IHS iSuppli, which predicts that the number of LTE users worldwide will hit 198.1 million in 2013. Over the next few years LTE adoption is expected to surge to 1 billion users in 2016, the research firm said. The forecast is somewhat more aggressive than those from other analyst firms, but it underscores expectations that 2013 will be a strong year for LTE and that LTE adoption rates will speed up thereafter.

Mozilla launches two Firefox OS-based phones for developers

Jan,22, 2013
by: Mikael Ricknäs
Mozilla has launched Keon and Peak, two smartphones based on the web-centric Firefox OS platform. The first phones will start shipping in February, and have been developed in cooperation with Spanish operator Telefónica and Geeksphone, which is based in Madrid. No pricing has been announced, but Firefox OS has been pitched as low-cost competitor to Android. It can deliver a far better experience than Android at handset price points of roughly US$100, Telefónica said last year. The specifications provided by Mozilla also hint at low price tags. The Keon is powered by a 1GHz processor, has a 3.5-inch touchscreen and a 3-megapixel camera. The Peak is more powerful with its dual-core 1.2GHz processor. It also has a 4.3-inch screen and an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 2-megapixel camera on the front.
