Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad will lose its stranglehold on the worldwide tablet market this year, overcome by a wave of smaller, lower-priced devices powered by Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, research firm IDC forecasts.

Manufacturers are expected to ship 190.9 million tablets in 2013, up from IDC's previous estimate of 172.4 million units. Android-based tablets are on pace to represent 48.8 percent of shipments this year, up from 41.5 percent in the firm's previous forecast, while the iPad is expected to slip from 51 percent of the market in 2012 to 46 percent.

FCC approves T-Mobile USA/MetroPCS deal

Mar,13,2013
by:+ Dan Meyer
The Federal Communications Commission gave its stamp of approval for T-Mobile USA’s merger with MetroPCS that will see the nation’s No. 4 and No. 5 carriers combine operations into a stronger, though still No. 4, competitor.

The deal, which was announced last October, is being conducted as a “reverse merger” that will see T-Mobile USA’s parent company Deutsche Telekom reduce its control in the new entity to 74%. In return, MetroPCS shareholders will receive about $1.5 billion in cash and remaining control in the company. When the deal was announced, the companies indicated that both brands would likely continue to be offered with recently named T-Mobile USA CEO John Legere continuing as CEO of the new company, current T-Mobile USA COO Jim Alling set to run the T-Mobile USA part of the business and current MetroPCS COO Thomas Keys set to run the MetroPCS side. The future of current MetroPCS CEO Roger Linquist was not revealed.

BlackBerry’s Stock Jumps on Lenovo CEO's Deal Speculation

Mar,12, 2013
by:+Ben Munson
Shares of BlackBerry (formerly Research In Motion) jumped up close to $15 yesterday on news that Lenovo was pondering buying the Canadian OEM.

Bloomberg reports Lenovo’s CEO Yang Yuanqing, in conversation with French publication Les Echos, said a deal to buy BlackBerry could make sense but mentioned the need first to analyze the market and determine the importance of the company.

Lenovo CFO Wong Wai Ming told Bloomberg something similar in January. He said that his company was looking at all opportunities, including a possible purchase of BlackBerry. The news then came after numerous hints from BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins that his company was open to selling its hardware division.

The company in January officially announced its new BlackBerry 10 OS as well as two new handsets, the touchscreen Z10 and touchscreen plus QWERTY Q10. The Z10 this month will finally be available to consumers on both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Featured Report: The Surprising Numbers Behind Apps

Wall Street Journal Digital
Mar,11, 2013

by:+ Scott Austin
How much time do people spend with apps? How much money does the average app developer make?

The answers may surprise you.

Last week, the Journal began a new series about apps that examines the business strategies, identifies the winners and losers, and chronicles the seedier side of the industry.

“The Business of Apps” also uncovers the numbers behind the industry’s economics. Here’s a look back at some of the more interesting stats from last week’s stories:

First, the big money. The global apps business is expected to make $25 billion in revenue this year, up 62% from a year ago, according to Gartner. To put that in perspective, movie theaters sold less than half that dollar amount at the box office in 2012.

Hello Businesses Owner,

I am writing to you because our changing health care system will have a profound effect on all of us. Now that the election is over and the Supreme Court has ruled, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is not going away. It will not be repealed and it is up to us to make sure it will work for small businesses and individuals as it was intended to do.

That’s why I joined the Campaign for Better Health Care’s newly created Small Business Health Care Consortium (SBHCC). This consortium views the needs of small businesses and their employees as a top priority.

And, as a member of the Steering Committee of the SBHCC I am personally inviting you to join our network of small businesses who know that only through our collective voices that will assure that the Affordable Care Act live up to its goal of making healthcare affordable for all.

Discussions around health reform have been confusing and, sometimes, even misleading. It is the goal of the SBHCC to provide factual information about the changes that are already happening and those coming in the near future. The SBHCC discusses the benefits and opportunities of the ACA and what Illinois small businesses need to do to make sure this law will benefit them.

Many key components of the ACA are national in nature. For instance, small businesses currently providing health insurance to their employees could be eligible for a 35% tax credit. And, while employers with fewer than 50 full time employees are not required to provide health insurance, their employees can take advantage of the ACA’s benefits.

Other components will be implemented at the State level and these decisions will either enhance small businesses or provide another hurdle. One important component is that all states must implement a health insurance exchange (marketplace). These exchanges will include a rate review process with defined, easy to understand plans to consider and review side-by-side.

As small business owners we share many of the same, serious business challenges. It is my hope that you and your small business peers do want to learn more about the ACA. Let’s take this opportunity to act collectively to get control of health insurance costs and improve access to coverage. The opportunity to create positive change is now. It is about fairness and choices for small businesses. To that end I like for you to hear my own personal story about how the new healthcare law will effect me.
