Wireless industry scores ‘poor’ rating in consumer satisfaction survey

by:+ Dan Meyer.
Despite the billions of dollars spent by the wireless industry in advertising its wares to consumers, satisfaction with the sector continues to fall short. A new report from the Temkin Group found that the wireless industry garnered a “poor” rating from a consumer survey.

Among specific carriers, no-contract provider TracFone posted the highest consumer satisfaction rating with a 66% score, though that result was No. 115 out of the 246 companies surveyed across 19 industries. TracFone provides wireless services through various brand names and across various carrier networks.

Verizon Wireless was the second highest rated wireless carrier in the rating, managing a 62% score in the survey.

by:+Jason Ankeny
Users are embracing a growing array of high-powered data services, meaning mobile operators must continue working to increase the data speeds available to their subscribers. The result is a situation where users have more services at their fingertips available at faster speeds. But how much data does the average smartphone user consume each month?

FierceWireless is teaming with NPD Connected Intelligence to publish the results of the firm's SmartMeter surveying software. NPD's SmartMeter software is installed on around 1,500 smartphones, tracking cellular data usage across the U.S.

Report: Smartphones Account for 93 Percent of Gross Handset Profits

Mar,20, 2013
by:+Andrew Berg
Smartphone margins are where it's at if you're a handset manufacturer these days. According to a new report from IHS iSuppli, smartphones accounted for 87 percent of handset industry revenue in 2012 and a staggering 93 percent of gross profits, even though they only made up 46 percent of unit shipments.

Feature phones accounted for 54 percent of handset unit shipments but accounted for 13 percent of revenue and just 7 percent of gross profits.

The shift has meant spoils for top smartphone vendors Apple and Samsung, while Nokia and Motorola have suffered.

Featured Report: The 5 things you need for the perfect smartphone
ZD Net
Mar,18, 2013

by:+ Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols
What makes a "perfect" smartphone? Some of my fellow journalist buddies and I wrestled with the question, and here's what we came up with:
First, some part of "perfection" depends on the person. For example, I love QWERTY keyboards, so my personal favorite phone is a Motorola Droid 4. Most people could care less about QWERTY keyboards.

You can also spend a lot of time arguing over which is the best smartphone operating system — Android, as far as I'm concerned — but as Adrian Kingsley-Hughes recently pointed out in his piece on Android vs. Apple's iOS, for most people, most of the time, there's no significant usability difference between the two major mobile operating systems. I know, I know; we can argue about the virtues of one OS over another until the sun goes out and the oxygen freezes out of the air, but practically speaking, most users can't tell the difference.

Hello Businesses Owner,

I am writing to you because our changing health care system will have a profound effect on all of us. Now that the election is over and the Supreme Court has ruled, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is not going away. It will not be repealed and it is up to us to make sure it will work for small businesses and individuals as it was intended to do.

That’s why I joined the Campaign for Better Health Care’s newly created Small Business Health Care Consortium (SBHCC). This consortium views the needs of small businesses and their employees as a top priority.

And, as a member of the Steering Committee of the SBHCC I am personally inviting you to join our network of small businesses who know that only through our collective voices that will assure that the Affordable Care Act live up to its goal of making healthcare affordable for all.

Discussions around health reform have been confusing and, sometimes, even misleading. It is the goal of the SBHCC to provide factual information about the changes that are already happening and those coming in the near future. The SBHCC discusses the benefits and opportunities of the ACA and what Illinois small businesses need to do to make sure this law will benefit them.

Many key components of the ACA are national in nature. For instance, small businesses currently providing health insurance to their employees could be eligible for a 35% tax credit. And, while employers with fewer than 50 full time employees are not required to provide health insurance, their employees can take advantage of the ACA’s benefits.

Other components will be implemented at the State level and these decisions will either enhance small businesses or provide another hurdle. One important component is that all states must implement a health insurance exchange (marketplace). These exchanges will include a rate review process with defined, easy to understand plans to consider and review side-by-side.

As small business owners we share many of the same, serious business challenges. It is my hope that you and your small business peers do want to learn more about the ACA. Let’s take this opportunity to act collectively to get control of health insurance costs and improve access to coverage. The opportunity to create positive change is now. It is about fairness and choices for small businesses. To that end I like for you to hear my own personal story about how the new healthcare law will effect me.
