BARCELONA, Spain--BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) is seeing one-third of new BlackBerry 10 device sales coming from customers who are switching to the platform from other smartphone operating systems, a higher figure than the company had anticipated, according to a senior company executive.

Though he declined to provide exact sales figures, Rick Costanzo, Blackberry's executive vice president of global sales, said early sales of the BlackBerry Z10, the company's first BlackBerry 10 device, are exceeding expectations. "No one is declaring victory by any stretch of the imagination, but gosh, we're off to a great start," he said in an interview here with FierceWireless at the Mobile World Congress trade show. He also said calls to customer care for the Z10 are lower than BlackBerry or its operator partners expected.

White House throws support behind unlocking phones

Mar,04,2013
by:+Phil Goldstein
The Obama administration said it supports consumers who want to unlock their mobile phones without fear of breaking the law, and it urged legislative fixes to remedy a recent government ruling on the topic that removed protections for people who do unlock their phones.
A petition on the subject has so far received more than 114,00 signatures, well above the 100,000-threshold needed to trigger an official White House response. The petition, started Jan. 25 by OpenSignal co-founder Sina Khanifar, asked that "the White House ask the Librarian of Congress to rescind this decision, and failing that, champion a bill that makes unlocking permanently legal."

BlackBerry Developer Support Still Shaky as Netflix Bows Out

Mar,05,2013
by:+Andrew Berg
It's all about the apps for any mobile platform hopeful and it seems BlackBerry 10 just continues to prove that it can't attract the heavy hitters. In the wake of Yahoo! reporting yesterday that it will kill support for its dedicated BlackBerry app, Netflix says it too is steering clear of the platform. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital, Neflix said it has no plans to develop an app for BlackBerry.

From the beginning of its saga to bring BlackBerry 10 to market, BlackBerry executives have made a concerted effort to attract big-name developers to its QNX-based platform. The company has managed to land the likes of Twitter and Facebook, as well as a number of other big names, but there are a number of companies that are holding off on investing in BlackBerry.

Hello Businesses Owner,

I am writing to you because our changing health care system will have a profound effect on all of us. Now that the election is over and the Supreme Court has ruled, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is not going away. It will not be repealed and it is up to us to make sure it will work for small businesses and individuals as it was intended to do.

That’s why I joined the Campaign for Better Health Care’s newly created Small Business Health Care Consortium (SBHCC). This consortium views the needs of small businesses and their employees as a top priority.

And, as a member of the Steering Committee of the SBHCC I am personally inviting you to join our network of small businesses who know that only through our collective voices that will assure that the Affordable Care Act live up to its goal of making healthcare affordable for all.

Discussions around health reform have been confusing and, sometimes, even misleading. It is the goal of the SBHCC to provide factual information about the changes that are already happening and those coming in the near future. The SBHCC discusses the benefits and opportunities of the ACA and what Illinois small businesses need to do to make sure this law will benefit them.

Many key components of the ACA are national in nature. For instance, small businesses currently providing health insurance to their employees could be eligible for a 35% tax credit. And, while employers with fewer than 50 full time employees are not required to provide health insurance, their employees can take advantage of the ACA’s benefits.

Other components will be implemented at the State level and these decisions will either enhance small businesses or provide another hurdle. One important component is that all states must implement a health insurance exchange (marketplace). These exchanges will include a rate review process with defined, easy to understand plans to consider and review side-by-side.

As small business owners we share many of the same, serious business challenges. It is my hope that you and your small business peers do want to learn more about the ACA. Let’s take this opportunity to act collectively to get control of health insurance costs and improve access to coverage. The opportunity to create positive change is now. It is about fairness and choices for small businesses. To that end I like for you to hear my own personal story about how the new healthcare law will effect me.
