Miami Children's Hospital Senior Vice President and CIO Ed Martinez believes that much of the future of patient care is tied to an ability to reach patients through telehealth and mobile solutions. He was named the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives' Innovator of the Year in 2012 for leading the development of an eHealth initiative that sought to boost patient engagement while simultaneously improving workflow processes, all of which was part of a larger effort to serve underserved communities.

"We're able to provide telemedicine technologies fronted with engagement and wellness software, which allow for a doctor away from the office," Martinez (pictured) told FierceHealthIT at last week's Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's annual conference in New Orleans. "That's where I think a lot of care is going."

Doc gender, patient-care costs not related: study

Mar,14,2013
by:+ Rachel Landen
There does not appear to be a link between physician gender and patient-care costs or mortality, according to a study conducted by researchers at UC Davis Health System.

Though earlier studies suggested that the communication styles and related behaviors often associated with female physicians may lower their patients' use of services and healthcare costs, the UC Davis study demonstrated otherwise.

For the study, which was published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine's March-April issue, researchers evaluated responses provided by 21,365 patients aged 18 and older between the years 2002 and 2008 as part of the U.S. Medical Expenditure Panel Survey project. Their determination was that the genders of respondents' usual healthcare providers did not have an impact on the cost of their healthcare or prescription drugs; deaths; or frequency of hospital, emergency room or medical office visits.

Hospitals reject new Part B rebilling rule

Mar,14, 2013
by:+Joe Carlson
Acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner issued a sweeping new rule late Wednesday designed to address hospitals' complaints that they have been collectively denied hundreds of millions of dollars by Medicare because of disputes over the differences between inpatient and outpatient care.

But criticisms of the short-term ruling surfaced immediately, because it was accompanied by a detailed notice of proposed rulemaking on the same topic that critics say is actually worse than the process that is in place today.

“It is not what hospitals want to see. It looks like it at first, but it is not,” said healthcare attorney Andrew Wachler, who has spoken with CMS officials about the rule changes and has worked closely with the agency in the past on what is known as the “Part B rebilling” dispute.

Hello Businesses Owner,

I am writing to you because our changing health care system will have a profound effect on all of us. Now that the election is over and the Supreme Court has ruled, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is not going away. It will not be repealed and it is up to us to make sure it will work for small businesses and individuals as it was intended to do.

That’s why I joined the Campaign for Better Health Care’s newly created Small Business Health Care Consortium (SBHCC). This consortium views the needs of small businesses and their employees as a top priority.

And, as a member of the Steering Committee of the SBHCC I am personally inviting you to join our network of small businesses who know that only through our collective voices that will assure that the Affordable Care Act live up to its goal of making healthcare affordable for all.

Discussions around health reform have been confusing and, sometimes, even misleading. It is the goal of the SBHCC to provide factual information about the changes that are already happening and those coming in the near future. The SBHCC discusses the benefits and opportunities of the ACA and what Illinois small businesses need to do to make sure this law will benefit them.

Many key components of the ACA are national in nature. For instance, small businesses currently providing health insurance to their employees could be eligible for a 35% tax credit. And, while employers with fewer than 50 full time employees are not required to provide health insurance, their employees can take advantage of the ACA’s benefits.

Other components will be implemented at the State level and these decisions will either enhance small businesses or provide another hurdle. One important component is that all states must implement a health insurance exchange (marketplace). These exchanges will include a rate review process with defined, easy to understand plans to consider and review side-by-side.

As small business owners we share many of the same, serious business challenges. It is my hope that you and your small business peers do want to learn more about the ACA. Let’s take this opportunity to act collectively to get control of health insurance costs and improve access to coverage. The opportunity to create positive change is now. It is about fairness and choices for small businesses. To that end I like for you to hear my own personal story about how the new healthcare law will effect me.
