A total of 464 major U.S. health information breaches have affected 20.8 million individuals since September 2009, according to the latest federal tally, which was recently updated with 29 new incidents. The 29 breaches affecting 740,000 individuals were added to the tally in recent days after a lull of several weeks when no new major breaches were added to the list, compiled by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights.

Healthcare Anti-Fraud Coalition Formed

The Obama administration has launched a new public-private collaborative effort to help prevent healthcare insurance fraud. The voluntary group includes healthcare organizations and associations, health insurers, federal and state agencies, and anti-fraud groups that together aim to combat healthcare fraud through the sharing of information and best practices. Goals include improving detection of suspicious activity and stopping fraudulent billing before fake claims are paid.

HIMSS Calls for Political Party Platforms To State Support for Health IT

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society has proposed language for the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee to include in their 2012 platforms to state their support for health IT adoption, Healthcare IT News reports. H. Stephen Lieber -- president and CEO of HIMSS -- said there is bipartisan support for moving "toward a [health care] system that rewards efficiency and quality outcomes, in part by enabling providers and patients to access the right information at the right time through robust nationwide adoption of health IT."

AMA debuts online group for managed-care contract support

The American Medical Association has launched an online community aimed at helping doctors improve their managed-care contracting strategies. In a news release, the Chicago-based organization said the new Cutting-edge Contracting Group will let physicians and other health professionals connect and share tips and resources for working with commercial insurers "Managed-care contracts are changing with the emergence of new payment models and integrated delivery systems," AMA President Dr. Jeremy Lazarus said in the release. The AMA's tools, he said, "will help physicians understand the new contract terms and achieve healthier business relationships with insurers."
