eMarketer estimates that by the end of this year there will be nearly 116 million smartphone users in the US, as well as nearly 55 million tablet users. And in many cases, smartphone and tablet owners have made their mobile or portable devices their primary venue for computing—especially for less-intensive tasks like web browsing and communication. June research from Prosper Mobile Insights indicates that there are some substantial differences between men and women in the US when it comes to choosing mobile-only for certain activities. The greatest differences were in usage of email, Facebook, online shopping and internet search, with sizeable differences in Twitter and Pinterest usage as well.

Increased tablet competition could hurt Kindle Fire, not iPad

Tablets are likely to be high on consumers’ wishlists this holiday season. However, unlike last year – when the tablet market was dominated by the iPad – and Kindle Fire – the space will be much more competitive this year with a host of new entries. As more companies enter the tablet space, they are educating consumers about the benefits of the device and bringing new customers into the market. The increased competition is likely to impact how existing players perform this holiday season, with the Kindle Fire possibly taking a hit while the iPad will remain strong.

Marin: 18% of paid search clicks come from mobile devices

Marin Software, a digital advertising management company, found in its quarterly U.S. Online Advertising Quarterly Report, that 18% of paid search clicks come from mobile devices, says Gagan Kanwar, director of partnerships and research at Marin Software. The report uses data from 1,500-plus advertisers and agencies that collectively spend more than $3.5 billion annually on biddable media, Kanwar says.

Fortune 500 executives behind on social networking

With more than half of the U.S. public on Facebook and more than 200 million tweets sent each day (about 30 percent from the U.S.), American life is continuing to enmesh itself with social networks. But for the CEOs of the top 500 U.S. companies, social networking is a small — if existent — piece of successful living. In a report released Thursday by Domo and CEO.com, the online presence of Fortune 500 companies’ top executives was compared to that of the general public, revealing that less than 30 percent have at least one profile on social networks. The vast majority have none.
