So much for the mass market tradition. Seeking to get the same marketing buzz as Apple’s iPhone, Nokia is reportedly in talks with operators about forming exclusive arrangements to sell Windows 8 smartphones when they launch this fall. The Financial Times reports the device maker is in talks with France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, although no deal has yet been reached. The tactic is a 180-degree swing from Nokia’s usual strategy, in which it strives to get its new phones into as many hands across as many channels as possible. Mobile app downloads expected to decline as markets mature

The average number of mobile applications downloaded each year by consumers is set to fall in the years ahead as markets mature and the mobile web evolves, ABI Research forecasts. Smartphone owners across the globe will download about 36 billion mobile apps in 2012, an average of almost 37 native app installs per user--a 6 percent year-over-year increase, ABI reports. Even so, the firm expects download totals to modestly decrease over the coming years.

Tablet Travelers Still Pulling Content, Not Pushing Productivity

Don’t Leave Home Without Your Tablet One recent survey of American travelers showed that for most, tablets usually come along for the trip. Nearly 70% of the 1,200 respondents to the survey take their tablets outside their home always or most of the time, which helps dispel the notion that iPads, the dominant tablet on the market, are not very portable. The survey was one of several conducted by Cloud Nine Media, which enables sponsors to provide complimentary WiFi to users in public venues like airports and hotel. As part of the sponsorship, Cloud Nine can conduct one- or two-question surveys of users during the sign-in process, a painless way of gathering a little information on who’s doing what in these situations.

UPDATED: Apple claims Samsung's patent infringement costs $2.5B in damages

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) alleged in a court filing that Samsun Electronics' purported patent infringement means Apple is entitled to $2.52 billion in damages, a claim Samsung quickly sought to knock down in its own filing. The dueling filings come as the smartphone titans finally head to a long awaited trial over their patent disputes. The trial begins in federal court July 30. According to a partially redacted filing on Tuesday with a federal court in San Jose, Calif., and seen by Reuters, Apple said Samsung owes it "substantial monetary damages" because it illegally "chose to compete by copying Apple." Apple said Samsung's copying of its iPhone and iPad has led to billions of dollars in profit and a loss of $500 million in profit for Apple.
