Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan's selection as the Republican vice presidential nominee has put Medicare reform back in the national spotlight, as Ryan's plans for transforming Medicare into a "premium support" system gain renewed attention. Of particular significance is how Ryan's plan to offer beneficiaries federal payments to pick the health plan of their choice goes over with voters in Florida and Pennsylvania—two presidential battleground states with large Medicare-beneficiary populations.

ONC Plans Mobile Security Guidance

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT is studying use of mobile devices in small healthcare environments. The goal: new mobile security guidance that will be released in 2013. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT next spring will release a guidance to help small and mid-sized healthcare providers secure mobile devices. In preparing these best practices, ONC has several projects underway studying how mobile devices are used in these smaller healthcare environments. Read more

Report: Governments Should Promote Digital Health Innovations

Governments should play a role in leveraging digital technology to improve the health care industry, according to a report by the Digital Innovation in Healthcare Working Group, Modern Healthcare reports (Conn, Modern Healthcare, 8/14). The report was presented earlier this month at the Global Health Policy Summit in London (Hall, FierceHealthIT, 8/15). The summit was supported by the Qatar Foundation and Imperial College of London.

Retail clinic visits continue climb

Visits to retail clinics increased 303% from 2007 to 2009, and about 44.4% of those visits occurred during hours when physician offices are typically closed, according to a report posted online by Health Affairs. The report, which includes data from CVS Caremark Corp.-owned MinuteClinic, Walgreens-owned Take Care Health Systems, and Kroger Co.-owned Little Clinic, stated that there were 1.48 million retail clinic visits in 2007, 3.52 million in 2008, and 5.97 million in 2009. The authors, researchers from the Rand Corp. and the University of Pittsburgh, noted that the study does not include patient-visit data from 2010, the year retail clinics made chronic disease management a focus.
