Featured Report: Samsung Outsells iPhone, Breaks Shipping Records

Consumers worldwide may still have iPhone fever, but it looks like Samsung shipped nearly twice as many smartphones as Apple during the second quarter. According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung shipped 50.5 million units in its second quarter — the largest number of shipments ever made by a smartphone manufacturer in a quarter — and occupied about 35% of the global market. Meanwhile, Apple shipped about 26 million units during the quarter (about 18% market share).

For a while there (before the introduction of the iPhone), it seemed Research In Motion just about had it all. BlackBerry sales were growing worldwide and the devices were so addictive that the public called it “CrackBerry.” I had a BlackBerry at the time and was very bullish on it before the introduction of the iPhone. But, when Apple introduced the iPhone, their iOS environment and really intuitive user interface, the world of handheld operating systems and user experience changed forever. RIM immediately fell behind. Google’s Android only magnified the difference between the “old way” (BlackBerry) and the “new way” (graphical user interfaces, access to hardware, applications and application stores).

Verizon to pay $1.25M to settle claims over blocking tethering apps

The FCC said Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will pay $1.25 million undr a consent decree and allow customers to download Android applications that allow them to turn their phones into mobile hotspots. The FCC found that Verizon was wrong to block access to such apps, which customers were using to get around Verizon's old $30 monthly mobile hotspot charge.

Republic Wireless Reboots Beta with Motorola Phone

Republic Wireless is taking a second stab at the beta launch of its Wi-Fi-centric smartphone business. The startup said today it was reopening the beta release of its $19 per month unlimited service, which uses Wi-Fi as the primary mode of connectivity and Sprint's network for cellular backup. The re-launch is being ushered in with a new smartphone, the Motorola Defy XT. Customers already in line for Republic's service will be the first to have access to the Android handset, retailing for $249 without a contract.
