Consumer apps led the charge as private companies across the mobile sector raised $3.9 billion in venture financing during the first six months of 2012, according to M&A advisory firm Rutberg & Company. Venture capital firms invested in 479 mobile startups during the first half of 2012, with mobile representing 46 percent of total tech investment throughout the period, Rutberg & Company reports. The median round size was $3.5 million, with 61 percent of investments totaling $5 million or less. The six-month mobile investment total represents the highest level of activity for a half-year period since the firm initiated coverage in 2001--in addition, 2012 mobile investments are currently $1 billion ahead of the pace set during the first half of 2011, which was the largest year for mobile tech venture funding in a decade

FCC: 19 Million Americans Lack Broadband Access

The FCC reports that 19 million U.S. residents still lack access to high-speed Internet service, especially in rural and tribal areas. Even if broadband is available, about 100 million Americans - nearly one-third of the population - still don't subscribe to the service, the agency said in a report on broadband access and adoption released yesterday. AT&T rolls out cloud-based mobile device management for small businesses

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) is expanding its Mobile Device Management suite to the small business segment, offering mom-and-pops access to the same cloud-based services and applications it supplies to larger enterprise customers. AT&T's Mobile Device Management program enables businesses to supervise employees' mobile devices and data usage. Features include lost device detection, including password recovery, device lock, wipe and encryption, as well as remote configuration of email, Wi-Fi and Virtual Private Networks. Asset management tools enable business owners to track company-owned devices, and application distribution capabilities allow firms to push authorized apps to employees' smartphones and tablets while also granting them control over which additional apps may or may not be downloaded.

Mobile-Phone Users Spending More Dough On Accessories

Mobile-phone owners are not just spending money on their phones and monthly subscriptions. Sales of mobile-phone accessories shot up 32 percent during the first half of 2012 compared with the same period last year, says a new report from NPD Group. Cases proved the most popular accessory, with sales soaring 70 percent over 2011 despite an average 25 percent increase in case prices. Stereo headphones with microphones took second place, with their sales rising 67 percent over the same period.
