Verizon Wireless is getting more cloud-friendly and productivity-minded with the addition of Microsoft Office 365 to its mobile portfolio of tools designed for small business customers. The online version of Microsoft's productivity and collaboration platform will enable Verizon's SMB clientele to have another option for cloud-based email, instant messaging, video conferencing, and document sharing. Michael C. Schaefer, executive director of the Verizon Wireless Business Solutions unit, explained in a statement that Verizon's motivation here is to address two "priorities" for SMB customers: "simplicity and cost effectiveness."

Smart Devices in the Enterprise to Double by 2014

The number of employee-owned smartphones and tablets used in the enterprise is set to reach 350 million by 2014, up from 150 million this year, according to a recent report by analyst firm Juniper Research. This represents almost 23% of all consumer-owned tablets and smartphones. Mobile phones are becoming increasingly multi-purpose, and are now so central to most people's work and personal lives that they simply cannot get by without them.

MetroPCS launches VoLTE service via LG Connect smartphone

MetroPCS (NYSE:PCS) became the first U.S. carrier to commercially launch a Voice over LTE device, announcing that its LG Connect 4G smartphone will now be sold with VoLTE support. South Korean carrier SK Telecom also just announced the launch of its VoLTE service. The VoLTE version of the LG Connect 4G costs $249 before taxes and after rebate offers. Robert Wondoloski, staff vice president in the CTO office of MetroPCS, told FierceWireless that right now the VoLTE service is only available in the Dallas-Ft. Worth market. "We are working on optimization of the service in the other markets, which will roll out this year and into first quarter of next year," he said. "VoLTE capable handsets will be sold in these markets, and will become VoLTE activated when the market is optimized and launched.

Android, iOS combine for record-breaking 85% of Q2 smartphone shipments

Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS combined to power a record 85 percent of all smartphones shipped worldwide during the second quarter of 2012, according to new data issued by market intelligence firm IDC. Android devices accounted for 68.1 percent of all smartphones shipped between April and June, led by Samsung Electronics, which manufactured 44 percent of those products--more than the next seven Android vendors' volumes added together. Manufacturers shipped 104.8 million Android smartphones in all, up from 50.8 million in the second quarter of 2011.
